📖 Lore
"SEER-thay-uhl" /ˈsɪər.θeɪ.əl/
"They don’t fly—but they’ll leave you wishing they did."
The Cirthael, or Iron-Claw, is a towering, flightless war bird bred for precision control in the chaos of urban combat. The size of a warhorse but far more agile, a Cirthael can leap alleys in a single bound, climb over barricades, or tear through a fleeing thief’s hiding place in seconds.
Originally forged for street-level dominance under the early Orders of the Invincible Overlord, they have since evolved into living instruments of detection and control, thanks to careful breeding, harsh training, and alchemical enhancement.
Every Cirthael is bonded to a single Iron Claw rider from fledgling age. The bond is so deep that the birds will accept no other master, and attempts to recondition a bird from a fallen rider are dangerous and often fatal—for both trainer and beast.
🧠 Magical Scent Detection – Arcane Olfaction
Through alchemical grafting and generations of selective breeding at the Windrook Aerie, Cirthael possess specialized receptors within their tongue ridges, nasal grooves, and upper beak plates that can detect and categorize arcane and anomalous energies.
They are trained to react to:
| Scent / Signature | Behavioral Response |
|---|
| Normal, declared magic | Ignored (unless concealed or misfiled) |
| Cursed items | Throat-clicking, backstep, aggressive posture |
| Necromantic objects | Low growl, rhythmic tapping with claws |
| Magitech or unstable magic | Head tilts, rapid chittering or pacing |
| Sentient objects | Sharp chirp or whistling toward handler |
| Concealment, glamers | Claw-scraping, shrieking, tail flare |
These behaviors are recognized and codified by Iron Claw handlers, to determine whether an item must be inspected, taxed, impounded, or cleansed.

-
Emotionally sensitive, bonding strongly not just to the rider but to smells and sensations—some birds will only patrol certain gates or alleys based on their earliest impressions.
-
Reacts poorly to fey, beggars, dogs, and illusions if not specifically desensitized during training.
🧬 Breeding & Deployment
All Cirthael in Ashkarin come from Windrook Aerie, bred by a secretive caste of Aeriekeepers who are rumored to bond with the birds on a telepathic level before hatching. The Iron Claws maintain over 100 active Cirthael, with at least 20 stationed at major city gates at all times.
Eggs are tightly controlled, with attempted theft punishable by execution—and not always by law.
