📜 Introduction:

Hakkı “Red” is a soot-streaked, jittery torchbearer of the Pale Lodge—one of the nameless dozens who keep the lanterns lit while others write legends in blood and shadow. Once a rat-catcher’s apprentice turned fish-smoker, Rojo joined the Lodge after a fire he started in the Ashkarin docks ended up saving a dozen children from a skulk attack. Or so he says.

Known more for flailing torches in terror than battlefield glory, Rojo has nonetheless walked farther into cursed barrows and haunted sewers than many armed mercenaries. Lodge Trailborn tolerate his antics with eye-rolls and grins—because while Rojo may panic, flee, or set the wrong things ablaze... he always comes back with the flame.

His Trail Name, “Rojo,” was earned not for his red cloak or hair (he has neither), but for the time he lit a wine barrel on fire mid-escape, turned half the Pale Bounty Hall red with flames, and accidentally saved a doomed crew from death-by-rust-ghoul. A disaster and a miracle, all in one.

🧠 Traits

  • Fire-Obsessed: Starts every rest by lighting a “comfort torch,” even when not needed.

  • Loyal But Mercenary: Stays if paid, leaves if not—unless someone says "please."

  • Panics Loudly: Will shriek, run, or freeze unless watched by someone he respects.

  • Walking Hazard: Any flammable environment becomes a coin toss. The GM may roll d6 to determine if something catches fire when he fumbles.

🕯 Role in the Lodge:

Rojo serves as a trail-guide, flare-signal runner, and light-bringer in darkened crypts. Not every hero swings a sword—some just keep the dark at bay. Though mocked gently by veterans, many pale-eyed delvers owe him their lives... or at least their eyebrows.

He can be hired by PCs for basic dungeon support—lighting, camp prep, or carrying gear—but is not a combatant. His loyalty depends on daily silver or compelling kindness.

Use Rojo for:

  • Comic relief in grim delves

  • Accidental trap triggers or fire-starts

  • Unexpected moments of bravery

  • Reminders that even the lowest have stories worth telling

“The Trail never ends,” Rojo mutters, striking a spark with shaking hands, “but it sure gets darker than they said it would…”

Torchbearer, Trail Guide, and Light in Dark Places

Hakkı “Red,” torchbearer of the Pale Lodge of Ashkarin and loyal hireling to both the Death Gestures and their younger mercenary band, died in the fourth level of Stonehell Dungeon at the hands of Warden Durn Magh-Rok. He was forty-one years old.

Red met his end in the dry riverbed beneath the duergar excavations, where the cruel Warden wielded the Vrilyan Harmonic Gauntlet to devastating effect. In a single resonant pulse of psionic force, Durn Magh-Rok hurled Red twenty feet through the air. Red struck the stone bed and died before a second breath could leave his body. It was sudden, violent, and final. Stonehell rarely allows anything else.

Before his time in the dungeon, Red lived a quiet life as a rat catcher and fish smoker along the Ashkarin docks. His strange path into danger began after a fire he claimed to have started ended up saving children from a skulk attack. The Pale Lodge took him in, soot and all, and Red found purpose as a keeper of the flame in places where light was precious and fleeting.

He earned his trail name not for his hair, which was thinning, nor for any cloak, but for the time he set a wine barrel ablaze during a frantic escape and accidentally saved a doomed crew from rust ghouls. Red lived at the edge of disaster, stumbling between cowardice and luck in a way that kept others alive. He panicked loudly, returned faithfully, and carried the lantern farther into cursed ground than many fighters with steel in hand.

To the Death Gestures he was not a warrior, but he was a constant. His shaking torch marked the frontline. His small circle of light kept dread at bay. He worked for silver and stayed for kindness. He was no hero in the stories that bards prefer to tell, yet he helped heroes do the work that becomes legend.

He leaves behind no known family. What he leaves instead is memory: of a torch lifted in trembling hands, of small acts of bravery, of a man who understood that light matters most when it is weakest.

A torch will be lit in his honor at the entrance to Stonehell and allowed to burn itself out. Red gave all the light he had to give. The darkness can take the rest.

May the Trail lead him beyond shadow at last.
