Pale Lodge of Ember

“No names, no debts, only the Trail.”

🛡️ Overview

The Pale Lodge of Ember isn’t nestled inside a grand hall or festooned with banners. No, it squats in a repurposed stone granary beside a collapsed staircase that once led to a crusader’s chapel—now a ruin buried in soot and memory.

Its ironwood door is scorched but sturdy. No signage, only a single white bird etched into the lintel, its wings open, eyes blindfolded.

Smoke curls constantly from a crooked chimney, smelling of blackleaf tobacco, iron shavings, and dry pine.

The locals just call it “The Granary”, and avoid its threshold unless they’re looking to bleed.

🔰 The Lodge in Ember: Structure & Culture

  • Built by Trailhands with salvaged stone and darkwood.

  • Smaller than Ashkarin’s, it operates more like a trail post and triage station than a full hall.

  • Always manned, even at night.

  • Entry fee for outsiders: a silver or a story—your choice.

  • Most members sleep rough, outside, or rent at the Silverleaf Inn, but the Lodge allows fire-warmed shelter if you're injured, cursed, or recently resurrected.

Internal Code:

Adapted for Ember’s harsh conditions:

RuleMeaning
“Shelter Is for the Broken”First-time members may rest without cost if they're hurt or hunted.
“Silence Is Sacred”Do not ask another’s name inside unless you’re sharing trail salt.
“No Ghosts Left Behind”The Lodge will retrieve your body if marked. Fee due only if you return alive.

🪵 Facilities (Granary Interior)

AreaDescription
The Ashfire RingA sunken firepit with charred benches, where members share news, make pacts, or swear vengeance. The flames burn pale green at night.
The Ledger NicheA nook carved into the granary’s back wall. Holds stone tablets etched with contracts, coded in chalk glyphs and trail-sign.
Gearline CacheA locked iron case bolted to the floor—inside are trail packs, pitons, torches, silver nails, and other death-ward gear. Borrowed with blood-mark, returned clean or cursed.
Upper Rafter BunksRope ladders lead to three hay-matted alcoves under the rafters. Reserved for recovering members. You sleep beneath the White Bird’s wings here.
The Ember TableA stump from the Wishing Tree itself, used for binding oaths, reading maps, and weighing coins. It hums faintly in moonlight.

🐦 Lodgekeeper: Emelia Coal-Eye

(N female human Fighter 5 – Trail Name: “Ember-Still”)
A reclusive former sellsword, Syra lost her eye in a trail fire and now sees “only what matters.” She’s built like a hammer, sleeps with her boots on, and never repeats herself.

  • Dwells in a loft above the granary’s main hall.

  • Believes in quiet loyalty over loud honor.

  • Handles final oaths and bounty confirmations.

“No one’s too broken for the Trail. But plenty are too proud.”

🧭 Ember Lodge Resources

Despite its size, this Lodge keeps vital, hard-won intel for those who ask the right way (and pay the right price):

ResourceContents
Stonehell WhispersTrail maps, coded glyphs, creature routes. The Lodge has partial layouts of the upper levels, updated monthly.
Ashbarrow Dead ListNames and items left in Stonehell. Many entries say “retrieval wanted—no questions.”
Fog-Spirit LedgerSightings and signs near Ember’s outer slopes. Several entries end in “???” or “returned, not the same.”
Bastion Tithes & Tax-FlagsA secret list of which Bastion officials are watching who—and who might be bribed.
Wheel Vow ViolatorsThose who broke vows at the Shrine of the Wheel. Some are cursed. Some are hunted. A few are both.
