Golliver Munt, the Crucible-Hermit of Ember Bastion
“Every brew has a whisper. The trick is knowing which ones lie.”
🧪 Race: Human
🧙♂️ Class: Magic-User (Retired)
📍 Location: A ramshackle, soot-streaked tower near the sulfur springs of Ember Bastion known as Munt’s Still
💰 Cost: 1,000 gp per month (standard OSE alchemist rate)
🔮 Background
Once a wandering scholar of arcane chemistry, Golliver Munt retreated to Ember Bastion after a self-inflicted mishap with a Potion of Polymorph Self and a mimic’s liver. Now slightly hunched and half-asymmetrical (his left shoulder spasmodically twitches and grows barnacle-like lumps in moonlight), Munt devotes himself entirely to potioncraft.
He is not a licensed Guild alchemist. He considers them “formula-hoarding gentry with no respect for screaming tinctures.” Munt follows his own arcane recipe system, rooted in eccentric methods including color-chanting and vapour augury.

🧠 Personality & Mannerisms
-

Keeps an “ingredient reliquary” of monster bits suspended in slow-spinning glass orbs.
-
🛑 Working with Golliver
-
Requires privacy: Refuses to work if anyone observes the entire process. Peeking incurs his wrath or a random accident.
-
Will request strange ingredients from players to continue certain projects—often requiring trips into Stonehell.
-
Won’t work for Lawful-aligned theocrats. Claims their “spells poison the philosophical matrix of true alchemy.”
📜 Potential Plot Hooks
-
Golliver is trying to perfect a Potion of Lantern Reversal, which causes any flame to pull in light instead of emitting it. He needs “a torch-bearer's regret”—the haunting breath of a Torch-Bearer’s Ghost from Stonehell.
-
A rival Guild Alchemist has sent a shadow assassin to poison Munt’s ingredients. He may request protection or counter-sabotage.
-
Golliver believes that he can refine a Potion of Longevity that doesn’t mutate the drinker—but only if he acquires a tear of Moumb’s avatar, wept underground in utter darkness.
