Tamm Vestra

Lantern-Bearer of the Pale Lodge
Affiliation: The Pale Lodge of Ashkarin
Occupation: Lantern-Bearer, Trailwarden, Hireling
Alignment: Neutral (Disciplined)
Age: 28
Gender: Male

Overview

Tamm Vestra is a steady-handed lantern-bearer of the Pale Lodge, renowned for his quiet discipline and an uncanny sensitivity to cursed terrain. Though not an adventurer in the heroic sense, Tamm has spent years guiding delvers, pilgrims, and trailwardens through ruins, smuggler tunnels, and ancient city-fanes where light itself feels reluctant to linger. His family lantern, a hooded relic passed down for three generations, is said to have once belonged to an Ashkarin nightwatchman who patrolled demon-haunted docks.

Unlike many hirelings, Tamm exhibits neither bravado nor fear-struck timidity. He carries his lantern with an almost ritual reverence, speaking rarely but always with intention. Those who delve alongside him note that he is the first to sense when a place “is wrong,” often pausing mid-step to tilt his lantern toward arches or alcoves where spiritual pressure gathers.

After the death of Hakkı “Red,” the Death Gestures approached Tamm in Helmwatch Hall with an offer of service. The necromancer’s honesty and the group’s clear respect for the fallen hireling moved Tamm to join them, though with a vow to walk with “clear eyes and a steady flame.”

Personality

Tamm Vestra is calm, introspective, and observant. He seldom speaks unless spoken to and rarely volunteers opinions, but when he does, his words are concise and weighted with thought. He is guided by a highly developed internal sense of duty and prefers order, cleanliness, and the predictable rhythm of light maintenance.

He holds a deep, quiet respect for oaths and believes a lantern-bearer’s duty is not merely to hold light, but to read the world through it.

Appearance

Tamm is a lean, travel-hardened man with short dark hair and the perpetual half-shadow of sleepless nights beneath his eyes. He wears a weathered gray travel-cloak, a belted toolkit with several flasks of lantern oil, a striker box, spare wicks, a brass cleaning cloth, and a few Pale Lodge charms made of twine and vow-marked vellum. His hooded lantern is ornate but functional—heavy bronze plating with etched ventilation cuts and a warm, tightly-focused beam.

Skills & Traits

Senses Cursed Terrain:
Tamm can detect lingering spiritual corruption, desecration, or unnatural malaise within a ~20 foot radius. He cannot describe the sensation precisely, only that “the flame feels uneasy.”

Unshakeable Focus:
Tamm's lantern never wavers unless he wills it. Even under stress, he maintains steady hands and calm breathing.

Family Lantern (Hooded):
A sturdy bronze lantern with a focusing hood. Its beam can be tightened or widened with a sliding mechanism. Tamm knows exactly how far it casts light at each position.

Oil-Minded:
Carries flasks of lamp oil at all times; can refill a lantern mid-combat with surprising speed.

Quiet Loyalty:
His loyalty is not automatic but grows steadily when treated with honesty and respect.

History

Tamm grew up in the Ashkarin waterfront quarter, son of a night-lamp caretaker and a herbalist. Most of his early life was spent tending lamps, polishing lenses, and learning the quiet craft of keeping flame alive in storm-heavy winds. At age fourteen, he joined the Pale Lodge as a novice, serving under veteran trailwardens in the deeper ruins beneath the city.

His uncanny ability to sense “places where the lantern shivers” soon earned him a reputation as a dependable bearer for cursed or spiritually dangerous delves. While not fearless, his fear manifests as attentiveness rather than panic.

Role with the Death Gestures

After six months of dungeon work and the tragic loss of Hakkı “Red,” the necromancer of the Death Gestures approached Tamm in the quiet alcoves of Helmwatch Hall. Tamm accepted after careful thought, remarking:

“If you walk with truth, I will walk with light. Let us keep them together.”

He now serves as the Death Gestures’ primary lantern-bearer.

Relationships

The Death Gestures:
Respects their honesty and competence. Remains cautious but committed.

Hakki“Red”:
Respected him deeply; his death influenced Tamm’s decision to join the party.

Sister Irielle:
Considers her a guiding presence. Trusts her judgment implicitly.

Current Status

Active retainer of the Death Gestures, carrying their light into Stonehell with the practiced calm of a man who understands that flame may fail, but resolve must not.

Tamm Vestra sits polishing his lantern in Helmwatch Hall when the necromancer approaches. Without looking up, Tamm says, “If this is about Hakkı, I already lit a candle.” The necromancer sits beside him and makes the offer plainly: fair coin, hazard pay, and no lies about the risks ahead.

Tamm studies him for a long moment, lantern flame reflected in his eyes. “Your company walks through danger, and the shadows you carry are real,” he says. “But Hakkı trusted you, and you brought him home.” He rises, lifting the lantern by its worn handle. The light brightens a little.

“I will join you,” Tamm says. “Not blindly, but with clear eyes. I will keep the flame steady, if you keep the truth steady.” He nods once. “Tell the Death Gestures that Tamm Vestra walks with them.”
