The pre-Unity people of Ohr Kaluun were driven by a thirst for magical knowledge and a deep paranoia that spread through every level of society. The islands' wizards and priests sought power at any cost, and their pursuit of dark magic often set them at odds with Khaleshite crusaders and Pyrinean scholars. The Kaluunites devoted vast resources to fortification and security, creating labyrinths reinforced with steel, stone, and magic. Unfortunately for them, however, these static defenses could not protect them from the quori, who used dream manipulation to turn Kaluunite factions against one another. Today the mazes of Ohr Kaluun are vast ruins, shunned by loyal Riedrans.

The Inspired wield considerable influence on Ohr Kel, the largest island of the chain, while many of the smaller islands are uncivilized by the standards of the Inspired. These places are home to smugglers, monsters, and the dissident group known as the Heirs of Ohr Kaluun. Adventurers seeking to enter Riedra by stealth might be able to find assistance at a smuggler's port. However, the Riedran military is always hunting for these criminals, and safe havens frequently move about.

Riedra built its empire on the foundation of a dozen shattered nations. Scholars consider the loss of these nations to be a tragedy … except for Ohr Kaluun. The lords of this ancient kingdom were driven by deep paranoia and an all-consuming thirst for power. The sages of Ohr Kaluun studied the darkest paths of magic and bargained with fiends and other foul creatures. They warped their bodies through mystical rituals and pacts, creating the first changelings, skulks, and tiefling bloodlines. Ohr Kaluun was ultimately consumed by the feuds of its paranoid mage-lords and the crusading legions of its neighbors. Today, it is a shunned region, haunted and cursed. Dark secrets and great treasures remain in the vast war labyrinths of Ohr Kaluun, but fiends, wards, and far deadlier threats linger in this fallen kingdom.

War Mazes

The people of Ohr Kaluun were obsessed with protecting their dark secrets from the world. Engaged in endless struggles within and outside Ohr Kaluun, the Kaluunite wizards devoted vast material and magical resources to their labyrinthine fortresses. Although the mazes couldn't save the Kaluunites from the cunning of the Inspired, many of these wondrous edifices remain, testaments to the power and skill of their builders. Ancient treasures and hideous dangers, all created by human magicians, still wait within the remaining war mazes.

For someone who knows its keys, a war maze is a sanctuary, but to others, all war mazes are deathtraps. Walls and doors are reinforced with hardening, and most war mazes are shielded against scrying and teleportation. Ancient restless spirits and constructs roam many war mazes. Today, skulks, smugglers, and other rebels have taken shelter in these crumbling wonders.
