Vaanka means “Final” in the Orcish tongue. The Vaanka are the last bastion against the Demon Wastes. If the other clans were to fall, the Vaanka would stand ready to stop whatever had bested their kin, no matter the cost. They are led by the human kizshmit Dalkal Mal’fonn (female human ghaash’kala kizshmit, she/her) and the orc sar’malaan Silvik Raam (male orc ghaash’kala sar’malaan, he/him).

Vaanka Dar is the most traditional of the fortresses; a barrier across a mountain pass bristling with traps and wards. Its proximity to the Towering Wood means that the Vaanka attract the highest number of recruits from the Eldeen Reaches. So they have a more varied population than the other tribes, with a large population of shifters.

Clan Vaanka are the calm before the storm - the last line of defense that guards the backs of their comrades. Arguably the most benevolent of the Ghaash’kala, the Vaanka act as a wide net to catch any individuals that make it past the other clans. They use their relative peace to support the others by acting as messengers, negotiators and researchers. Despite this, the Vaanka are keenly aware of what it means should they come under attack - and strike back with unbridled fury.

The clan dwells on the peaks of Wyrms’ Grasp, close to the border between the Labyrinth and the Reaches. The view of verdant green on the horizon is a stark reminder of their duty, and the high position provides Vaanka scouts with commanding views of their surroundings. Between the peaks lies the mountain pass that acts as the main path to escape the Wastes, blocked by a an ancient shield wall; on either side, twin citadels crown the mountains, manned by archers and lookouts. The crown of one peak is capped by an ancient observatory, used by the Vaanka to divine fragments of the Prophecy. The other is a dragonhawk aerie; this ancient gift from the Reaches is used by Vaanka riders to deliver important messages and warnings between the clans, as well as their allies in the ancient forests at their back.

Vaanka culture is a blend of Ghaash’kala and Reacher traditions. A large proportion of shifters and humans make up the clan’s population, bringing druidic magic and habits with them. As a result, their warriors often make use of primal magic married with divine strength. The huge variety in backgrounds leads to a raucous mix, with former Ashbound sharing stories with church templars and satyrs alike.

Wyrm's Grasp

If the Ghaash’kala clans are the tines of a trident, the shield wall of Vaanka Dar is the solid hilt. Guarding the largest mountain pass from the Wastes to the Reaches, the immense fortification is a nigh unbreakable shield, and home to the Final Clan. Known as Wyrm’s Grasp, the shield wall lies between twin peaks that rise above the Labyrinth to the level of the Shadowcrags, providing panoramic views of both the verdant forest on one side, and the blasted hellscape on the other.

Inside Wyrms’ Grasp

The common name for Vaanka Dar arises from the twin focus on Eberron and Siberys present in its people. The taller peak is capped by an ancient observatory crafted by the couatl in ancient times; contained within are priceless tools to track the movements of the heavens, providing insights into the Draconic Prophecy. With their combined divine beliefs and primal traditions , the Star Druids and Nature Clerics of the Vaanka commune on their observations to keep track of future dangers. Imminent plots to release Overlords or the raising of prophetic champions in the Carrion Tribes, is critical information for the Ghaash’kala’s survival. The observatory also serves a far more mundane purpose; the keen eyes of the Vaanka Shifters keep watch for any creatures seeking to sneak through this final stretch of Labyrinth.

On Blessed Wings. The heights of the lower peak are devoted to dragonhawk aeries. The immense birds are an ancient gift from the Eldeen Reaches to aid the Ghaash’kala in their duties. Skilled riders use the dragonhawks to carry missives at speed between the clans, relaying prophetic news and diplomatic messages faster than flying fiends can catch. Over time, some of the birds have been blessed by the Kalok Shash with greater intelligence, silver talons, and divine spellcasting. These flameblessed hawks follow the Kalok Shash, and choose worthy riders themselves.

Verdant Defenders. On the slopes of both mountains, the Vaanka have built fortified homes out of quarried stone. Wyrm’s Grasp is located in a manifest zone to Lamannia that encourages plant growth and hardens natural materials; as a result, the Vaanka live on the surface behind nighunbreakable fortifications . Below the homes, step fields grow crops year-round due to Life Conduit artifacts that channel Lamannia’s influence. These are stored and carried to other clans by air in the event of a siege or other catastrophe, acting as a surprise back-up during dire events.
