The Karrnwood

Natural Feature

Wild and expansive, the Karrnwood occupies more than half of the duchy. Almost the entirety of the woods belong to the duchy, with the exception of the northwestern woods that are part of the Duchy of Narath.

Unique spiritual practices prevail in the communities along the Karrnwood’s border. The Three Faces of the Wild—venerating a balance between Arawai, Balinor, and the Devourer—is a particularly common variant of worship of the Host here. These beliefs often interweave with the veneration of fey spirits, as the Vassals here can see a dryad as not just representative of the Forest Queen but also Arawai. Some communities emphasize generosity and hospitality when incorporating fey traditions, expecting that their good nature will be rewarded, while others emphasize the tricks and rituals necessary to keep fey compliant.

The Karrnwood is a true wilderness, as it is simply too large and too frigid to be tamed. Ancient mysteries lurk within its depths, unseen by humanoids for eons. While the fey are the best-known supernatural force in the woods, others surely exist—dark and twisted woods tied to Mabar, bountiful wilds tied to Lamannia, and ever-frozen forests tied to Risia. Similarly, connections to Khyber could give footholds to all manner of foul corruption, from the hungry swarms of Valaara to the twisted growths of Avassh to strange and unknown shadow demiplanes or even overlords.
