Exploratory Mission #6: Mixtape Madness

For Exploratory Mission #6, your assignment is to create a multimedia representation of the human species by using a quintessential human technology and art: music. Your directive is to learn about the "ancient" human art of the mixtape, and then to create a digital facsimile of this technology as a method to express a response to your course inquiry.

Materials:

Mission Protocol:

After engaging with the archival materials provided, create a "mixtape" that represents the human species--all of the most important, most essential aspects that are fundamental to understanding what (and who) humans are.

Components:
  • The Playlist: This should be a list of at least twelve (12) songs that, together, convey a comprehensive overview of the human species. You should create a tracklist with song title, artist, and runtime, a provide a link to a YouTube playlist (it can be unlisted) or Spotify playlist (if absolutely unavoidable) that gather the songs in the correct order.
  • Liner Notes: Liner Notes are the paper insert included in the front of the cassette (or CD) case that included track information, notes about the artist, or information about each of the songs. For your liner notes, you should explain why you chose to include each song, how the songs relate, and how the collective mixtape represents humanity. Your liner notes should be relatively detailed to provide enough information that a listener unfamiliar with the class (or the music you choose) can understand the message of the mixtape and your thinking behind it. You may choose to discuss details about the songs (the music, genre, instruments, historical context), the artist, the lyrics, or other details that are related to your choice to include it, as well as drawing upon the materials, ideas, and discussions we've had this semester about what is a human/what it means to be human.
  • The Cover: Every good mixtape (or album) comes with cover art. Create your own cover that conveys the spirit of your mixtape, or choose (and properly attribute!) an image that you think best fits your mixtape, and give a brief explanation of your artwork. Unknown

Submit your mixtape on Moodle in a document that includes your name, the mission number (6), and your honor code signature, and bring me a hard copy of your liner notes. Recommended due date is Dec. 3rd.
