Rotkin

The Rotkin are sentient fungal colonies that take over the recently deceased. Born from decay, they possess a profound connection to the cycle of life and an appreciation for nature's relentless progression. Despite their eerie origin, Rotkin are not malevolent. They see themselves as accidental caretakers of the natural world.

Physically, young Rotkin appear as a grotesque blend of decayed flesh, bone, and bioluminescent fungi. As they grow, networks of fungal mycelium replace the rotten flesh and carry nutrients to the bones. With this patchwork appearance, they are often misunderstood for undead creatures.

Though Rotkin do not rely on eyesight or sound to interact, they have recently started to mimic other kins, making eyes from glowing fungi and vocal chords and air sacks from dense mycelium. With the practice spreading, on-sight killings of Rotkin have dramatically decreased.
