All across the world there are hundreds, if not thousands of mages who study the art of magic. Above them all lies the Elder Archmages, who has taken a step beyond and become the master in their field. There can only ever be one Elder Archmage in each school of magic at any one time, and it is tradition for a new Elder to inscribe their name on the stone obelisk located on Elysum.
