Solandir

This character is dead.
Inquisitor of the Talons
NPC

Solandir is a formidable inquisitor of the Talons of the Timeless Tome, revered and respected for his unparalleled mastery of Rift Magic and chronurgy—the manipulation of time. Striking in both appearance and presence, Solandir is recognized for his sharp, angular features, his plumage of white and grey feathers speckled with black, and a ring of black feathers encircling his face like a shadowed eclipse. His deep purple robes, adorned with shifting star charts and constellations, shimmer as though reflecting the ever-changing flow of the cosmos.

Once a brilliant sorcerer in the Mytharil Empire, Solandir was personally mentored by both Archmage Valekith (now Valekith) and Orion, developing into one of the most gifted chronomancers of his time. However, his life took a harrowing turn during the Continuum Crisis, when Valekith’s betrayal cursed him and shattered their civilization. Orion saved him from the brink of annihilation, pulling him through the collapsing Riftways.

Now, Solandir serves as a trusted inquisitor of the Talons, carrying out the most dangerous missions to track down forbidden knowledge, artifacts, and threats across the planes. His dedication to preserving the balance of reality—and his deep understanding of Khaos and its machinations—makes him one of Orion’s most valued agents.

Appearance

Solandir’s presence is both regal and severe. His white feathers, streaked with grey and black, form intricate patterns along his body, while the ring of black feathers around his face lends him an air of shadowed authority. His eyes, sharp and calculating, seem to pierce through any deception.

He wears deep purple robes embroidered with star charts and constellations that shift subtly as he moves, as if alive with celestial energy. His primary tool is a rift crystal orb, a sphere resembling an arcane stopwatch that pulsates with otherworldly light. This artifact is essential to his manipulation of time and gravity, allowing him to bend reality to his will in his relentless pursuit of forbidden magic.

Personality

Solandir is calculating and precise, often perceived as distant or cold. He speaks with a deliberate cadence, weighing every word as though each carries the weight of an entire plane. While his demeanor can be intimidating, those who earn his trust find him to be fiercely loyal and unyielding in his protection of the Talons’ mission.

His experiences during the Continuum Crisis have left him with a deep mistrust of ambition, particularly when it concerns the pursuit of forbidden power. Despite this, his insatiable curiosity drives him to uncover the truths of the cosmos, even if it means walking the thin line between knowledge and peril.

Role in the Talons of the Timeless Tome

As a Talon-Inquisitor, Solandir’s responsibilities extend beyond traditional scholarship. He is the hunter and warden of forbidden knowledge, tasked with seeking out artifacts, tomes, and magic that threaten the delicate balance of the planes. His extensive knowledge of Norska, the Plane of Khaos, and their interconnected histories has made him indispensable in the Talons’ ongoing struggle against chaos.

Solandir is also a mentor and strategist, guiding younger seekers in their understanding of planar dynamics and the dangers of interdimensional travel. His insights into Khaos and its influence across realms have helped the Talons foil numerous incursions.

Key Contributions and Achievements

  • Defending the Y’azi Empire: Solandir played a critical role in aiding the Y’azi Empire during the Tides of Chaos, a devastating incursion led by the Warrior-King Valkuur. His mastery of chronurgy allowed the Y’azi forces to anticipate enemy movements and delay critical battles, buying time for reinforcements to arrive.
  • Hatching Yoroku the Endless: Solandir was instrumental in hatching and raising Yoroku the Endless, a massive, draconic guardian imbued with rift energy. Yoroku now protects the Tani Mountains and Unknown from chaos incursions, thanks to Solandir’s meticulous training and deep understanding of the creature’s nature.
  • Rescuing the Sunsations: During a chaotic battle in the Tani Mountains, Solandir saved The Sunsations, a band of infamous adventurers, from a collapsing mountain. Using his rift crystal orb, he opened a portal to the Archives of Empyrean moments before Yoroku’s monstrous form crushed the terrain around them.
  • Hunting Khaos’ Influence: Solandir has led expeditions into the Realm of Khaos, braving its corrupted lands to gather fragments of its fragmented history. His insights into the origins and motivations of chaos champions have saved countless lives and thwarted their insidious schemes.

Legacy

Solandir’s reputation as an inquisitor is unparalleled. He is both a beacon of hope for the Talons and a warning of what happens when ambition turns to hubris. His dedication to the preservation of knowledge and the protection of the planes makes him a cornerstone of the Archives of Empyrean and a trusted ally of Orion.

Despite his past, Solandir refuses to let guilt define him. Instead, he channels his power and experience into ensuring that no one else suffers the fate of the Mytharil Empire. His name is synonymous with vigilance, and his actions continue to shape the balance of the planes.

Solandir's Demise

Tomb of the Twin-Spirit

Solandir, Inquisitor of the Talons of the Timeless Tome and master of chronurgy, was lost during the final moments of the confrontation with Valekith atop the crumbling Tomb of the Twin-Spirit. In the moments preceding his death, the eclipsed sun—twisted by Valekith’s will—was dragged unnaturally toward the Prime Plane, bathing The Isle of Ember in incinerating radiance.

Amidst the chaos, Solandir stood alongside Seraphis at the crumbling edge of the pyramid, Rift Magic flickering across his robes as he attempted to slow time itself to give the Avatars and The Sunsations a window to strike. It was not enough. Valekith’s temporal gravity tore through the material fabric of the world. As radiant pressure built to apocalyptic levels, Solandir was thrown from his stance by a collapsing spire.

Seraphis reached for him, dragging himself toward his friend in vain. In those final moments, Solandir lifted his face—half-seared, robes smoldering—and with his last breath, spat a curse through bloodied beak:

“May your very memory be swallowed by the void, Valekith.”

Then the sunfire took him.

His body, along with Seraphis, was reduced to ash in an instant—sacrificed in the final defense of the balance they both had fought so long to preserve. Their loss is immeasurable.

Solandir’s rift crystal orb was recovered from the cratered ruins of the tomb by Orion, now inert and dark. It has been returned to the Unknown, where it shall remain enshrined in an obsidian reliquary beside the warriors talisman of Seraphis. The Chronurgic Codex bears a black ribbon henceforth in his honor.

He was a sentinel of forbidden truths, a stalwart of the Talons, and a warrior who never ceased his vigil. His voice is silenced—but his legacy echoes still.

May the stars remember what the world forgets.
