Kustos-749's mind is a blank slate, the memories of a life lost to time and a magical affliction. But before the amnesia, there was war. A long time ago, in a war of honor against the Old Praetor (Maximus Antonius Glaber), the Clanks were beaten. Facing insurmountable numbers, they fought bravely but were ultimately defeated by the skill and strategy of a great Kashalite General. That general had the power to bind Kustos, and he chose to do so with an Oath, an act that froze Kustos in place and bound him to the General's life, or more technically, for the life of his owner.
As years passed, the General's son inherited Kustos along with a vast family fortune. Unlike his honorable father, the son was a degenerate who saw Kustos as little more than a peculiar, useless statue. In his quest to squander his family's wealth, the son gambled away Kustos-749 in a poker game to a man named Jaimus McNulty, who gladly accepted the strange statue as collateral. With the Clank rebellion still a fresh memory for some, Jaimus wisely disguised Kustos, wrapping him like a mummy to keep his identity hidden from those who would remember a prominent Clank leader.
Time, however, eventually began to erase the memories of the rebellion and its leaders, and Kustos was forgotten. But Jaimus was a curious man. He began to notice strange things—the statue sometimes stood in a slightly different pose, and once, Jaimus swore he heard the faint whisper of "gesundheit" when he sneezed. His curiosity eventually led him to discover the true nature of the "mummy" in his shoppe, but instead of selling the valuable find, Jaimus chose to keep Kustos safe. He never revealed the reason for his actions, but he scribbled a final, cryptic note before his mysterious death: "...fate is predetermined, it is destiny. Something that, by some force or almighty power, is bound to happen in one exact place at one exact time." This line, Jaimus wrote, was for his friend, Kustos, whose very existence was the living embodiment of that fate.
NOTES FROM CALVIN
I think at this time Kustos has more questions than answers. Was he made for a purpose? Since my memory wasn't wiped by Shamus he knows he's been a bodyguard before, but before that? The memories are disjointed like velum that has been scrapped clean to be written over again, but the indentations from a previous quill can every so faintly still be seen. Shadowy memories of fighting, the press of bodies both flesh and metal as the lines of a great combat come together and split again and again. But now with his collar no longer working a few things are starting to come back the term "Gear-Brother" where did that come from? When did he use that before? But more importantly does any of it matter? Is a clank only useful if they follow their purpose or can they find a new purpose? Kustos has a buzzing in his chest that he can't quite explain is this what excitement feels like????
