Luteslingers

The Luteslingers are a clandestine organization of bards, performers, and entertainers who have mastered the art of gathering secrets under the guise of amusement. With their talents for charm, deception, and entertainment, they weave their way into the highest courts and the darkest taverns, collecting information about everything and everyone. The Luteslingers thrive on subtlety, avoiding direct involvement in disputes, and instead selling their secrets to the highest bidder—whether noble, merchant, or criminal.

Operations and Methods

The Luteslingers use their musical, theatrical, and storytelling skills to infiltrate every stratum of Lygos society. They are equally at home performing for nobles at grand galas or playing in dimly lit taverns for drunk sailors. Their talents make them seem harmless and approachable, allowing them to gather secrets unnoticed.

  • Information Gathering: Whether through casual conversation, keen observation, or magical means, the Luteslingers are always listening. Many use spells like Detect Thoughts, Disguise Self, and Suggestion to gain an edge.

  • Performances as Cover: Every show or act is an opportunity. A cleverly placed song lyric, a bawdy tale, or a riddle with a hidden meaning can coax information out of even the most guarded individuals.

  • Network of Informants: While most members are performers, the Luteslingers also maintain a network of informants—innkeepers, servants, and street urchins—who provide valuable tips and insights.

  • Code of Shadows: The Luteslingers never reveal their clients or motives. They are strictly neutral, valuing their reputation for discretion above all else. Once a secret is sold, they wash their hands of its consequences.

Leadership

At the heart of the Luteslingers is Malvasius, a satyr whose flamboyant demeanor masks a calculating mind.

  • Malvasius, the Dancing Shadow: With clomping hooves and a melodic viol, Malvasius performs a unique, whimsical dance that entertains crowds while subtly conveying hidden messages to his agents. His jovial laughter and cheeky remarks make him seem approachable, but beneath his charming exterior lies a devious strategist who delights in outwitting others.

    • Appearance: Malvasius is a vision of color and flair, with his curling horns adorned with tiny bells and ribbons that jingle as he moves. His tailored doublet and cloak are always immaculate, and his viol is said to be enchanted to resonate with a hauntingly beautiful tone.

    • Personality: Malvasius thrives on chaos and intrigue, often steering conversations with riddles and half-truths. While he enjoys the game of deception, his ultimate loyalty lies with the Luteslingers and their code.

    • Secret Weapon: Malvasius is rumored to have a vault of the most sensitive secrets in Lygos, kept hidden even from his closest agents. These secrets are his ultimate insurance policy.

Hierarchy

The Luteslingers are structured more as a loose collective than a rigid organization. Each member operates semi-independently but answers to Malvasius when necessary.

  • Performers and Agents: Most Luteslingers are skilled bards who specialize in music, storytelling, or acting. They blend their performances with espionage, gathering information and passing it up the chain.

  • The Songweavers: A small inner circle of trusted agents who oversee specific regions of the city. They coordinate efforts, ensure discretion, and act as intermediaries between Malvasius and the rank-and-file members.

  • Informants: While not official members, informants are vital to the Luteslingers' operations. They provide tips in exchange for coin, protection, or favors.

Base of Operations

The Luteslingers have no fixed headquarters, preferring to remain mobile and adaptable. However, certain performance halls, taverns, and theaters are known to be frequented by their members. Rumor has it that Malvasius himself resides in an enchanted caravan that can appear and disappear at will.

Role in Lygos

The Luteslingers are both feared and revered in Lygos. Their neutrality and discretion make them valuable to every faction in the city, from nobles seeking dirt on their rivals to criminals planning heists. However, their growing influence and ability to control information make them a potential threat to anyone who underestimates them.

Rivals and Allies

  • The City Watch: Captain Audra Daggerlace views the Luteslingers as a dangerous unknown. While she acknowledges their usefulness in uncovering crimes, their refusal to cooperate fully frustrates her.

  • The Iron Congregation: The smugglers have a tenuous relationship with the Luteslingers, wary of their ability to expose their operations yet willing to pay for valuable intelligence.

  • Nobles and Guilds: The wealthy elite of Lygos often hire the Luteslingers to gain leverage over their rivals, though they do so with trepidation, knowing the performers might sell their own secrets just as easily.

Ambitions

The Luteslingers’ primary goal is to survive and thrive in the shadows. However, Malvasius has hinted at grander aspirations, possibly using their growing power to subtly shape the future of Lygos. For now, they remain a mystery wrapped in charm, their influence rippling quietly through the city.

In the streets of Lygos, one thing is certain: if there’s a secret, the Luteslingers already know it—and it’s only a matter of time before they decide who to tell.

Members

1. Brunna Threadgold (Dwarf Tailor & Costumier)
A stout dwarf woman with sharp eyes, nimble fingers, and a knack for fine stitches. Outwardly, Brunna is a tailor with a quiet little shop full of fabrics, threads, and needles. In truth, she creates every costume and disguise the Luteslingers use in their work. From false beards to silk gowns, her work is flawless, and she delights in outfitting her fellow spies for their next “performance.”

2. Jannik “The Silent Fool” Merrin (Human Mime & Juggler)
Thin, wiry, and pale, Jannik spends his days juggling, miming, and pratfalling in city squares. His exaggerated gestures and comical pantomimes make him a beloved street performer. Few realize his routines are carefully coded: a hat tossed here, a juggle dropped there—subtle signals that pass messages between safehouses. He thrives on being underestimated.

3. Alenya Quickmask (Elf Actress & Master of Disguise)
A petite elf woman with delicate features and expressive eyes, Alenya is an aspiring actress who has made disguise into an art form. She can vanish into nearly any persona—Dwarf, halfling, human, elf, even Tiefling—with the aid of Brunna’s costumes and her own mimicry. She has dreams of performing on grand stages but currently channels her talent into espionage.

4. Tobin Reedwhistle (Halfling Pianist & Listener)
A refined halfling with slick black hair and impeccable posture, Tobin is a pianist of remarkable skill. His quiet modesty and distinguished air have earned him frequent invitations to noble banquets and salons. While he plays, he listens. Tobin never forgets a whispered rumor, a careless boast, or a drunken confession, storing away secrets as easily as melodies.

5. Garrik “Bearbelly” Thorne (Human Brawler in Owlbear Costume)
A tall, burly human man with a booming laugh and a shambling gait. Garrik specializes in comic relief, donning a ridiculous owlbear suit and stumbling around for laughs at carnivals and taverns. Beneath the padded costume is a wall of muscle, making him one of the gang’s few true fighters. When things turn violent, Garrik drops the act and becomes a frighteningly effective bruiser.

6. Mera Puddlewick (GnomeTalent Agent & Planner)
A plump gnome woman with rosy cheeks, wire-rimmed spectacles, and a perpetually busy demeanor. Mera poses as a talent agent, managing bookings, venues, and performances for the Luteslingers. In truth, she handles all of the gang’s logistics—arranging safehouses, negotiating bribes, laundering coin, and making sure every performance doubles as a spy operation. She is the glue that holds the troupe together.
