Heidi Hubnelly

Shopkeeper

Elder of the Docks
Occupation: Fisher & Sailor (Retired), Dockside Shopkeeper
Alignment: Neutral Good
Affiliation: None officially, though respected by the dockside community and maritime guilds

Overview

Heidi Hubnelly is more than just a fishing and sailing supply merchant—she is a living archive of Lygos’ maritime history. For over a hundred years, she’s sailed the coasts, navigated treacherous straits, and traded with ports most locals can’t even name. Now retired from the sea, she operates a small shop near the docks, selling gear to sailors, fishermen, and would-be adventurers. Her slow, measured speech and tendency to wander through stories make conversations with her a test of patience—but those who listen often walk away with rare knowledge or valuable leads.

Appearance

  • Build: Stooped but sturdy, her movements slow but deliberate.

  • Shell: Moss-green, worn smooth in some places and deeply scarred in others—each mark a story.

  • Skin: Weathered and leathery, dotted with pale barnacle-like spots.

  • Eyes: Dark and warm, with a knowing gleam.

  • Clothing: A faded tunic, rope belt, and a wide-brimmed hat decorated with old fishing lures, feathers, and shells collected over decades.

Personality & Habits

  • Patient Mentor: Always willing to teach or guide, though never in a hurry.

  • Storyteller’s Cadence: Her answers often come wrapped in anecdotes, tangents, and personal recollections.

  • Deeply Connected: Knows nearly every sailor, ship, and long-standing business along the docks.

  • Calm Under Pressure: Decades at sea have given her an unshakable sense of composure.

Fishing & Sailing Supply Shop

  • Name: Hubnelly’s Nets & Knots

  • Location: On a quiet pier between the main merchant docks and the fishermen’s quarter.

  • Goods Sold: Nets, ropes, hooks, lures, bait, small nautical charms, seaworthy oilskins, and weathered maps.

  • Special Stock: Old nautical charts with hand-drawn notes, lucky trinkets from distant ports, and the occasional genuine relic tucked away among the clutter.

Role in a Campaign

  • Source of Lore: Can recall events in Lygos going back over a century, including changes in harbor routes, lost shipwrecks, and famous sea captains.

  • Quest Giver: Might send players to recover a keepsake from a wreck, deliver emergency supplies to a storm-stranded crew, or investigate suspicious activity near the reefs.

  • Information Broker: Knows who is in port, who owes who, and where trouble is brewing. Often introduces adventurers to captains, smugglers, or merchants—sometimes intentionally, sometimes not.

Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Strengths: Encyclopedic maritime memory, vast network of sea contacts, trusted by the dockside community.

  • Weaknesses: Speaks slowly, meanders off-topic, sometimes forgets crucial details until much later.

Reputation

  • Among Locals: Loved and respected as a living link to Lygos’ seafaring past.

  • Among Captains: Seen as a lucky charm and wise advisor—her blessing before a voyage is considered good fortune.

  • Among Adventurers: A reliable but time-consuming source of critical information.

Sample Dialogue

  • “Ahh… Captain Graylock. Yes, yes… he still owes me a net, come to think of it. Now, that was the summer the Whitespray ran thick with silverfin, which reminds me of the time…”

  • “Rope? Nets? Or perhaps you’re here for the kind of knot that keeps a ship—and a crew—together?”

  • “The sea teaches you patience, child. Or it swallows you whole. I chose patience.”
