Ruby is a precious gemstone variety of the mineral corundum. Specifically, it is red corundum as other colors of the same mineral are referred to as Sapphire. Pink colored corundum may be either classified as ruby or sapphire depending on locale. Commonly, natural rubies are cut and polished into gemstones and worn in jewelry.
