Gorran Braysnort

Sergeant

Sergeant Gorran Braysnort

Recruiter & Master Trainer of the Lygos Army • The Bull Who Builds Soldiers

Appearance

Gorran Braysnort is a towering, broad-shouldered brown-and-white Minotaur, his hide patterned like a stormcloud over snow. His horns are thick and polished, curving inward slightly like the crescent of a war banner. His nose ring is old brass, dented from years of brawls, and he wears a sleeveless training vest that does nothing to hide the scars carved across his arms and chest.

Dust clings to him perpetually, as though he’s been shouting in a drill yard since dawn. (He usually has.)

Personality

Gorran is:

  • loud

  • gruff

  • unimpressed by everything

  • surprisingly wise

  • secretly sentimental

  • and incapable of offering praise without an insult attached

Despite his constant complaining, he cares deeply about the recruits—in his own backhanded, Minotaur way.

He calls all new soldiers “rookies”, regardless of their age, race, or actual experience level.

When he bellows instructions, the sound echoes across the training yard and occasionally into nearby streets. More than one anxious teenager has fainted during their first day under his roar.

Role in Lygos

Gorran is the official head recruiter and drillmaster for the Lygos Army. He oversees:

  • new recruit evaluations

  • weapons training

  • discipline drills

  • formation practice

  • strength tests

  • induction ceremonies

He is also partially responsible for public recruitment drives—though his version consists mostly of shouting at people until they feel guilty enough to sign up.

💥 His Methods

Gorran’s training philosophy is simple:

“Yell until they get it right. Then yell because they didn’t get it right earlier.”

His style includes:

  • surprise push-ups

  • spear drills at dawn

  • endurance marches

  • shouting motivational insults

  • forcing rookies to spar with him (never ends well for them)

  • long lectures about discipline… and his personal disdain for laziness

He is more “cranky uncle” than tyrant. Recruits respect him because:

  • he pushes them past what they thought possible

  • he actually teaches good technique

  • he never plays favorites

  • he’ll defend his recruits fiercely against anyone but himself

Even his insults have affection behind them.

Famous Bellow

Gorran is capable of a roar so loud that:

  • birds flee the training grounds,

  • rookies drop their weapons,

  • and nearby civilians shout “NOT AGAIN!”

He claims he developed it after years of shouting over battlefield noise.

A few rookies have fainted from sheer shock.

🪖 Attitude Toward Adventurers

Gorran sees adventurers as:

  • “wasted potential”

  • “trained fighters with no discipline”

  • “mercenaries in need of a real job”

He will absolutely try to recruit the players, especially if they impress him.

“You fight well—for civilians. Ever consider REAL SERVICE?”
“Look at this! Straight backs! Focused eyes! You’re wasted on tavern brawls!”
“Rookies! I mean—adventurers! Same thing.”

If the players decline:

  • he grunts,

  • shakes his head,

  • and mutters about “lost talent and wasted muscle.”

If they accept:

  • he gives them the most brutal training montage imaginable.

🎖️ Quotes

“I said STAND AT ATTENTION! Not stand like a pile of moldy turnips!”

“Yes, yes, fine work. I suppose you’ve passed. Though I can’t be held responsible when you stab each other in the back with those spears!”

“WEAK! The lot of you! I’ve seen sturdier calves in a storm!”

“Quit fainting! It’s just yelling! I haven’t even raised my voice yet!”

“You! Adventurers! Have you considered meaningful employment?”

“I’ll train you. But you’ll regret it. And then you’ll thank me. And I won’t care.”

Each creature of his choice within 20 feet that can hear him must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or become Frightened of Gorran for 1 minute.

A frightened creature may repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

On a success: the creature is not frightened, but is shaken and has disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its turn.

  • Recruits have been known to faint.

  • Enemies often drop weapons or stumble back.

  • The roar echoes through alleys and barracks like a war-horn.

🛡️ REACTIONS

Parry

🎖️ Typical Combat Style

  • Bellows first to frighten and scatter.

  • Charges into the largest cluster of enemies.

  • Uses horn attacks when closing distance, axe afterward.

  • Protects weaker allies with parry and positioning.
