Zoraphiel Faeborne

Librarian

High Elf • Scholar of Eight Centuries • Keeper of the Marble Lantern

Zoraphiel Faeborne has presided over the Library of Lygos for longer than most citizens have been alive. Tall, slender, and silver-haired, she carries herself with the deliberate grace of someone who has spent centuries navigating stacks of precious manuscripts. Her eyes are pale gold—bright, sharp, and always calculating—and despite her age, nothing seems to escape her notice.

Well… almost nothing.

Appearance & Demeanor

Zoraphiel dresses in long, flowing robes of soft indigo and parchment-white, the sleeves dusted with faint ink stains. Her expression is usually calm and wise, but librarians know the subtle signs: a slight narrowing of the eye when someone lies, a faint curl of the lip when a book is mishandled, and a rare but radiant smile when someone shows genuine love for learning.

She walks with a long ash-wood staff, carved with runes of knowledge, inquiry, and memory. Most assume it is a simple walking aid; in truth, it houses a permanent enchantment allowing her to cast Locate Object—typically to find books “misplaced” by careless patrons.

Her movements are slow but never frail—she is deliberate, not weak.

The Infamous Satchel

Zoraphiel always carries an overflowing satchel stuffed with loose parchment, half-finished translations, quills, bookplates, lecture notes, and overdue reminders. The bag is enchanted with a minor pocket-dimension; otherwise, it would have burst years ago.

Ask her for any document, and after a minute of rummaging and muttering, she will produce it—often with an absentminded “Ah, I knew that was in there somewhere.”

The Secret Sweet Pocket

Within the folds of her robe is a hidden pocket filled with:

  • Honey drops

  • Mint sticks

  • Dried sugared fruits

  • Caramelized nuts

She swears the staff don’t know, but they absolutely do.
Whenever she thinks she’s unobserved, she slips in a sweet with the deftness of a rogue stealing a gem.

If caught, she simply clears her throat and says:

“A librarian must keep her mind sharp. Sugar is… medicinal.”

📖 Personality

Zoraphiel is:

  • Wise, with millennium-deep patience

  • Kind, especially to young scholars

  • Strict, especially to people who bend pages or mishandle books

  • Absentminded, about practical matters

  • Sharp-tongued, when pushed

She has a habit of muttering corrections under her breath when overhearing historical inaccuracies.

Despite her reserve, she secretly adores poetry and collects amateur chapbooks from the library’s weekly artist market.

Magical Abilities

Though she seldom displays it, Zoraphiel is a capable mage. Most of her spellcasting is subtle:

She has not used an offensive spell in centuries and prays she never must again.

Role in the Library

As the Head Librarian, Zoraphiel:

  • Oversees the Private Collection

  • Approves access requests

  • Manages scribes

  • Personally evaluates rare acquisitions

  • Ensures political and guild influence never outweighs scholarly integrity

She holds enormous soft power in Lygos. Even guildmasters bow their heads in her presence.

Adventure Hooks

  • A missing book requires Zoraphiel's magical tracking abilities—and possibly the party’s intervention.

  • A rare tome surfaces, and she hires adventurers to secure it before smugglers claim it.

  • Someone steals one of her sweets, and she launches a surprisingly fierce investigation.

  • She recognizes a PC’s ancestry or magical aura, hinting at deeper mysteries.
