Description:
Al-Strahal, once a beacon of elven majesty, now stands as a haunting monument to decadence and decline. The city's towering alabaster spires, known as the White Teeth, pierce the sky like skeletal fingers. Once gleaming, these spires have dulled with time and neglect, reflecting the slow decay of the city itself. Home to the city’s noble families, these towers loom over Al-Strahal, their occupants lost in a perpetual haze induced by the narcotic known as Black Milk, derived from the Black Lotus.
The city's architecture speaks of former glory—graceful arches, grand plazas, and intricately carved facades. But the beauty has soured, with the once-vibrant streets now eerie and silent, earning Al-Strahal the name "The Sleeping Spires." The majority of the city's elite, including its titular master, Vaas Kuruthim, are trapped in a cycle of apocalyptic dreams, detached from the crumbling reality around them.
Political Structure:
The governance of Al-Strahal has withered alongside its population. Vaas Kuruthim, the city's nominal ruler, has not been seen awake for nearly a year, his mind consumed by the dreams induced by Black Milk. The Kuruthim family, once powerful, has all but withdrawn from public life, their grand manor now a silent monument to their decline.
In the absence of leadership, the city’s day-to-day operations have fallen to Crothia Zearein, the tyrant-general of Al-Strahal's standing army. One of the few who has resisted the lure of Black Milk, Zearein’s stern and uncompromising leadership keeps the city functional, though just barely. Her control is ironclad, driven by a desire to maintain order in a city teetering on the brink of collapse.
Economy:
Al-Strahal’s economy is a grotesque reflection of its people’s addiction. The city, once a thriving trade hub along the southern coast, now sustains itself by selling off its treasures. The elites, desperate to fund their addiction to Black Milk, strip their own homes of anything valuable—artifacts, heirlooms, and relics of a bygone era—to sell to the highest bidder.
Despite the decay, Al-Strahal has not yet fully bankrupted itself. The city’s deep reserves of wealth and its reputation for finely crafted goods keep it afloat. However, this wealth is dwindling, and the city’s once-proud cultural exports are now seen as symbols of desperation.
The city imports most of its essential goods, such as fish and produce, from surrounding regions by sea, as it can no longer sustain its own food supply. The most critical import, however, remains the Black Lotus, harvested from the jungles on the Island of Moog. This flower is the source of the Black Milk that enslaves the city's elites, even as it slowly poisons the city from within.
Culture and Society:
The elves of Al-Strahal, once known for their brilliance and artistry, have become cruel and indifferent, their minds twisted by the nightmares that now dominate their existence. The city’s culture, once a vibrant expression of elven creativity, is now a dark parody of its former self. Festivals and celebrations have become rare, and when they do occur, they are hollow, joyless affairs marked by excess and debauchery.
The city’s isolation from the outside world grows as its elites sink deeper into their dreams. Few visitors are welcomed, and those who do come find a city that is both fascinating and repellent—a place where beauty and decay coexist in a haunting dance.
Defense:
Despite its decline, Al-Strahal maintains a formidable defense, primarily due to the efforts of Crothia Zearein. The city’s walls are still strong, and its army, though smaller than in its prime, is well-trained and fiercely loyal to Zearein. However, the city’s dependence on external goods, particularly the Black Lotus, makes it vulnerable to blockade or disruption.
Safety Rating:
Danger Level: 3 (Moderately Dangerous)
- Reasons: Al-Strahal is a city in decline, its once-safe streets now shadowed by the decay of its people and culture. While still functional under the strict rule of Crothia Zearein, the city’s deepening addiction, economic desperation, and the looming threat of collapse make it a perilous place to be. Travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution, as the city's veneer of order could crumble at any moment.
