Buy a House / Stronghold

This is the guide to buying a place to live in the city.

Buying a house is pretty straightforward. You pay the money, you get a house.

For a keep, tower, temple or establishment, we'll be using the benefits from Strongholds & Followers. The exception is troops. There is a limit on the number of units you can acquire, both because the city limits it and because it's hard to attract trained units. This is not a game where you'll march troops into the jungle.

There is potentially a lot of money to be made as an adventurer in this realm. Here is a list of prices for an average home or stronghold by district in Seregon. Note that there are restrictions on troops stationed at your stronghold in Seregon. The default troops required to maintain your stronghold does not exceed this.

These are average homes. Some homes in the Starfire Hill District sell for several hundred thousand gold pieces. A large stronghold implies it is on the same footprint of land as the smaller stronghold. Otherwise, you would buy another lot, adding the house price again to the total. There are limits. If you exceed one plot, there may need to be community discussion.

TYPES OF STRONGHOLDS

There are four types of basic stronghold, one complex stronghold, and many varieties. Any character can build or use any stronghold.

  • A keep is a martial stronghold for characters interested in raising armies and defending the local townsfolk. Barbarian camps and pirate ships are variations on this. Seregon is lightly defended and there are limits to the number of troops you can station in the city. For example, The Ithosian Talons have Fortress Ithos in town, but they are also enticed to build forts outside of the city. The Immortals of Karsis are carefully monitored to ensure their troop strength couldn’t overwhelm Seregon’s defenses.
  • A tower is an arcane stronghold for doing spell research and learning battle magic.
  • A temple is a divine stronghold for summoning extraplanar allies and learning battle magic. A druid’s grove is a popular variation.
  • An establishment is an espionage stronghold for sabotaging your enemies and generating revenue. In Seregon, an establishment will always be in a gang’s territory and will need to be fine with the Seven Sins and Bargemasters.
  • A castle combines a keep and one or more of the above into a larger complex owned and run by multiple characters, each of whom can gain the mechanical benefits thereof. A castle adds 10% on top of that.

Repairing a Ruin

Say you fined a ruined tower, what will it take to turn it into a stronghold?

Usually half the cost of a new one, always starting at the small size. For example, a (small) wizards tower in the Old Knot District would normally cost 8,500gp, but you can fix it. up for 4,260gp.

There are times a stronghold is clearly more than an entry level building, in which case the benefits and costs go up accordingly.
