Crimson Fang Ruby Mine

The Crimson Fang Mine is one of the most valuable sources of rubies in the region, located deep within the steamy jungles of Phoor. It has a reputation for producing large, blood-red rubies prized across the continent, which have fueled the local economy and made the mine a target for opportunistic raiders. The mine is tucked between the towering jungle canopy and the nearby cliffs, surrounded by treacherous terrain and hidden dangers.

Overview

Guard Unit: Immortals of Karsis

The Immortals of Karsis, a legendary company of dragonborn warriors, have been contracted to protect the mine due to its vital importance. The Immortals are known for their discipline, resilience, and skill in combat. They are a prestigious force often hired for high-profile jobs requiring both muscle and brains. Their presence at the mine is a clear indicator of how valuable the mine is.

  • Unit Size: 20 Immortals of Karsis stationed at the mine, with rotating patrols.

  • Specialization: Jungle warfare, defensive combat, and anti-ambush tactics.

Captain Arvok "Greenscale" Thalir

  • Race: Dragonborn (Emerald-green scales)
  • Rank: Captain of the Immortals of Karsis
  • Age: 42
  • Appearance: Captain Arvok is a towering figure, his emerald-green scales providing natural camouflage in the jungle. His piercing golden eyes give him a fearsome aura, and his stoic demeanor commands respect from those under his command. He is rarely seen without his ceremonial dragonbone armor, intricately carved with runes of protection.
  • Background: Arvok is a veteran of countless battles. His tactical prowess has made him a legend among the Immortals of Karsis, and he’s known for his ability to coordinate defenses and outmaneuver enemies even in hostile terrain. His leadership has kept the mine safe from larger raids, but recent attacks have tested his patience.
  • Personality: Arvok is calculating and disciplined, known for his meticulous battle plans. He prefers to anticipate his enemies’ moves rather than react, and his deep respect for jungle warfare makes him especially adept at leading his unit through the challenging terrain of Phoor.
  • Tactics: He employs a network of scouts and traps around the mine to detect intruders and prefers ambush tactics when engaging enemies in the jungle.

Problem: Beastfolk Raiders

The Crimson Fang Mine has been plagued by a tribe of beastfolk raiders, cunning and vicious attackers that utilize the dense jungle to stage ambushes and hit-and-run assaults on the mine’s supply lines and outlying workers.

Tactics: The beastfolk excel in guerrilla warfare. They wait until the Immortals' patrols are stretched thin before striking isolated caravans or work camps. They also use the jungle's natural hazards—such as poisonous plants, quicksand, and wildlife—to their advantage. This has led to several patrols being wiped out before they could call for reinforcements.

  • Goals: The raiders are motivated not only by greed but also by a deep-rooted animosity toward the outsiders who have encroached upon their ancestral land. They see the mine as a scar on the jungle, and their attacks are aimed at driving the miners away.

Recent Developments

  • Supply Caravans Attacked: Several supply caravans have been ambushed in recent weeks, with no survivors. The raiders took everything of value, including food, weapons, and even mining equipment. The attacks have become bolder, leading Captain Arvok to suspect that the beastfolk are planning a major assault on the mine itself.
  • Lost Patrols: Two patrols sent out to track the raiders were ambushed and have not returned. This has increased tensions among the workers and led to decreased productivity as fear spreads.
  • Mine Workers Missing: Workers who venture too far from the main camp have gone missing, their bodies later found torn apart and left as warnings. These gruesome discoveries have caused morale to plummet.

Approach

The journey to the Crimson Fang Ruby Mine begins on the One Road, a straight and crumbling path that was once a proud rail line. Eighty miles from Seregon, the jungle has claimed most of the world, but the One Road remains defiantly clear, carved like a scar through the verdant green. Vines hang low and steam rises from the earth, thick with the scent of iron and sap.

Flanking the road are three dozen fortified structures, all built from thick, dark jungle wood. Their construction is simple but durable, meant to hold against more than weather. Each one is partially barricaded, some with rusted tools, others with bones, and many bear the black mildew and red dust of the mine’s corruption. These buildings once housed workers and guards. Now, they sit hollow and grim, watching the road with silent windows like empty eyes.

A couple dozen zombies drift through the ruins, slow and senseless. They move without purpose, wandering in looping, repetitive paths—miners and guards raised again, their uniforms rotted and stained, their lanterns still swaying from their belts. Occasionally, a sickly red glow flashes in their chests, as if the mine still calls to them from within.

Lurking among the buildings is something more dangerous. The creature springs from behind cover with gleeful violence, tearing into the zombies like a predator in a field of prey. It moves low and heavy, a grotesque hybrid of mastiff and insect, its body covered in plates of dark chitin that glisten with sticky resin. Four clawed feet drag along the road, scraping stone with each lurching step.

The creature lacks eyes but misses nothing. Its wide nostrils flare as it snorts and huffs, tracking movement by sound and scent. A long, barbed tongue—slick with slime—lashes out with terrifying speed, sometimes snapping a zombie in half from thirty feet away, then slurping it into its gaping maw. Within, two sets of teeth—one horizontal, the other vertical—grind and shear with wet, mechanical precision. When it is not feeding, it sniffs and paces like a guard dog gone mad, amused by its own slaughter.

As the road climbs into the mountains, the buildings thin out. Soon, there are only mine carts, long-abandoned and derailed, their wheels locked with rust and jungle vines. The air here is dry and mineral-rich. A great opening yawns in the cliffside ahead—the mouth of the Crimson Fang Ruby Mine. Darkness spills from within like smoke. The stone around the entrance is stained crimson, and the rails vanish into the mine's throat, swallowed by shadow.

Something ancient and waiting lurks beyond.
