Planar Cosmology

The Island of Moog has long been a place of mystery and danger, but in recent years, the very life force of the island has been corrupted by a devastating force: the Zombie Apocalypse. This apocalyptic event has hijacked the mycelium network, the vast underground network that connects all plant life, particularly the massive, ancient fungal systems that spread throughout Moog's dense jungles. What once served as a vital life-giving system for the jungle ecosystem has now been twisted into a dark conduit for negative energy. This network is now being used to animate the dead and propagate the zombie plague across the island.

Coterminous Regions and the Negative Material Plane

The coterminous regions on Moog have become the epicenters of the island’s growing undead crisis. As the planet Phoor spins on its axis, it periodically aligns with various planes of existence, creating conjunction points in different locations around the globe. In the case of Moog, the island has developed a strong affinity with the Negative Material Plane, the plane of death and undeath. This affinity has created several coterminous regions—zones where the boundaries between the material world and the Negative Plane are dangerously thin.

In these regions, the energies of death and decay seep into the material world, leading to abnormal concentrations of negative energy. The results are devastating:

  • Greater Undead: The presence of negative energy in these conjunction points doesn't just spawn more zombies; it empowers them. Greater undead, such as wights, death knights, and zombie lords, are far more common in these areas. They are stronger, more intelligent, and more resilient than the mindless undead that roam elsewhere on the island.
  • Tears in the Continuum: Over time, these regions are at risk of ripping open completely, creating permanent portals to the Negative Material Plane. If this happens, the influx of negative energy could destroy the island’s ecosystem entirely, plunging Moog into a state of perpetual undeath. It would also likely spread the zombie apocalypse beyond Moog to the rest of the planet (already happened).

There are believed to be half a dozen of these coterminous regions scattered across the island, all hidden deep within the untamed jungle. Their exact locations are known only to those who have studied the ancient jungle magics or have been unlucky enough to stumble across them.

The Mycelium Network and Undead Propagation

The mycelium network that permeates the island's jungles has become the primary vehicle for spreading the zombie apocalypse. As the network weaves through the soil, it channels negative energy, infusing it into the ground and animating the dead. This causes zombies and other undead to spring up with alarming frequency, even outside the coterminous regions.

The negative energy has corrupted the natural flow of life in the jungle, turning it into a system that feeds on death. The fungal spores, once symbiotic with the jungle’s plant life, now spread death and decay, fueling the apocalypse. As long as the network remains hijacked, the production of undead will continue, regardless of efforts to eliminate the current undead threats. Even cutting down trees or burning fields has proven ineffective, as the mycelium network operates underground, constantly replenishing itself and spreading its dark influence across the island.

A Possible Solution: Positive Energy Countermeasures

There is, however, a theoretical solution to mitigate the effects of the zombie apocalypse and the coterminous regions. Scholars, druids, and clerics of Moog believe that if a positive energy counter could be implemented in these conjunction points, it could reduce the island’s affinity to the Negative Material Plane. Doing so would have the following effects:

  • Weaken the Undead: The presence of positive energy could suppress the influx of negative energy, thereby weakening the undead in these regions. Zombies, wights, and other undead creatures would lose much of their unnatural strength and resilience, making them easier to destroy.
  • Prevent the Creation of Greater Undead: Without a steady flow of negative energy, the regions would no longer produce greater undead, limiting the rise of zombie lords, liches, and other high-tier undead entities.
  • Stabilize the Continuum: By neutralizing the negative energy, the risk of tearing a hole in the planar continuum could be avoided, preserving the natural balance between planes and preventing the permanent arrival of the Negative Material Plane into the material world.

Methods of Positive Energy Infusion:

  1. Sacred Rituals: Ancient Olmoy rites or druidic ceremonies could be used to infuse holy or nature magic into the earth. These rituals, however, would require immense magical power and coordination from multiple practitioners.
  2. Divine Artifacts: Relics of positive energy, blessed by the gods or powerful celestial beings, could be planted in the ground at these coterminous regions to act as beacons of positive energy, repelling negative energy and restoring balance to the land.
  3. Clerical Intervention: Clerics of light and life domains could invoke divine powers to consecrate the ground, creating temporary sanctuaries where the undead cannot rise or survive.

Ongoing Threat

Despite the potential of using positive energy to weaken the undead, it would not eliminate the root cause of the apocalypse—the corrupted mycelium network. While these efforts could diminish the concentration of undead near the coterminous regions, the mycelium’s influence will continue to propagate undead elsewhere on the island. Therefore, to truly end the zombie apocalypse, a way must be found to cleanse the mycelium network itself or sever its connection to the Negative Material Plane.

For now, the people of Moog must tread carefully through the death-infested jungles, knowing that the longer the negative energy flows through the land, the closer the island comes to an eternal state of undeath.
