Lights in the Sky

The ziggurats of Seregon pulse with ancient power, releasing waves of energy tied to the planes of existence from which they draw. These monumental structures are more than just stone and history—they are conduits, alive with magic, shaped by millennia of arcane calculations. Each ziggurat resonates with a distinct planar influence, and the energies released shift the very nature of the city itself during key periods of the year.

For the citizens of Seregon, the months between mid-fall and mid-winter are not just a time of seasonal change but a period when the skies ignite with mysterious light, and the city's soul transforms. Each ziggurat has its festival, drawn from the conjunctions of the planes, guided by forgotten rituals, and controlled by powerful organizations, whether they be cults, temples, or hidden hands.

The Energetic Cycle of the Ziggurats

Each of the four known ziggurats periodically releases planar energy on the night of their conjunction, usually once in the middle of their designated month. The nights leading up to this event are punctuated by flashes of light that grow in intensity until they climax in an all-night illumination. During these moments, the energy flows through Seregon, impacting not just the ziggurat's immediate surroundings but the people, the city's atmosphere, and even the creatures that lurk in the shadows.

These energies, while immense, don’t just enrich the city with arcane power; they also draw malevolent forces, dark spirits, and opportunistic beings from beyond the material plane, seeking to exploit the transient weakness of the fabric between worlds.

The Festivals and Their Energies

Each festival held during the conjunction not only celebrates a cultural or religious figure but also serves as a way to manage the unleashed power of the ziggurats, whether for good or ill.

1. Ziggurat of Shub-Niggurath (8th Month)

Energy Released:

  • White energy from Mechanus, the plane of law. This energy brings order but also a cold, ruthless efficiency that amplifies both virtue and vice in extreme ways.

Impact on Seregon:
During the conjunction, the streets become unnaturally orderly, as if a greater force compels all to fall into line. However, the energy also emboldens darker tendencies in the worshippers of Set, pushing their obsession with control, domination, and sin to new heights.

Festival of Set:
The Judgment of Sin and Virtue is where this energy manifests most dramatically. Worshippers of Set revel in law twisted to serve evil: gladiatorial battles, ruthless trials of power, and indulgence in all the deadly sins. The city’s atmosphere is tense, as the citizens are both drawn to and repelled by the wild displays of pride, wrath, and lust.

Festival of Kishar:
In contrast, the followers of Kishar use this same energy to craft rituals of fertility, creation, and beauty. The rigid order of Mechanus aligns perfectly with agricultural cycles and craftsmanship, ensuring a bountiful harvest and the birth of new works of art. The Dance of Silk, a ritual of sensual mystery, offers a more refined experience of pleasure than the hedonistic indulgence of Set’s followers.

2. Ziggurat of Ubbo-Sathla (9th Month)

Energy Released:

  • Blue energy from Arcadia, the plane of lawful good, symbolizing harmony between law and virtue.

Impact on Seregon:
The city is enveloped in a serene, tranquil blue light, as if Seregon itself has been dipped into the calm waters of peace and justice. Law enforcement becomes unusually strict, but it is tempered with compassion. The citizens find themselves drawn toward virtuous actions, as if an invisible hand guides them toward the righteous path.

Festival of Mitra:
The Scales of Truth celebrates Mitra’s ideals of honor, trustworthiness, and justice. During the festival, trials are held, oaths are taken, and the populace is encouraged to confess their sins, offering them a chance at redemption. The influence of Arcadia empowers clerics and paladins of Mitra, enabling them to purge the city of sorcery, deceit, and moral corruption. The Trial of Shadows is a key moment, where those accused face divine judgment in public squares, ensuring that only the pure of heart can escape unscathed.

3. Ziggurat of Zo-Kalar (10th Month)

Energy Released:

  • Green energy from Bytopia, the neutral good plane, embodying prosperity, creativity, and harmony with nature.

Impact on Seregon:
The green energy radiating from Zo-Kalar during its conjunction brings a sense of abundance and charity to the city. Crops thrive, artisans find their inspiration heightened, and the wealthy are moved to share their fortunes. The energy affects the city’s flora and fauna, with plants growing rapidly and animals becoming unusually friendly, further emphasizing the harmonious relationship between the city and nature.

Festival of Asura:
The Dawn of Giving is a time of unparalleled generosity, when every temple and noble house opens its doors to the poor and hungry. The entire city feels lighter, brighter, and more connected, with even the most hardened criminals moved to acts of charity. The Flame of Hope ceremony creates a sea of flickering lights throughout the city, symbolizing the radiant spirit of Asura guiding the people through the darkness. This day is sacred to those who value community, equality, and artistic expression.

4. Ziggurat of Zoth-Ommog (11th Month)

Energy Released:

  • Red energy from Beastlands, the plane of chaotic good, representing primal instinct, passion, and wild freedom.

Impact on Seregon:
When Zoth-Ommog illuminates the sky, Seregon becomes wild. Emotions run high, and instincts, rather than logic, guide the people. The primal energy brings forth a time of camaraderie, but also untamed revelry. Friends bond through daring feats of physicality, while lovers embrace with reckless passion. Even animals are influenced, becoming bolder and more aggressive in their actions.

Festival of Tarhun and Ishtar:
The Tempest of Love and Battle is a dual celebration of wild energy and unrestrained affection. During the Storm Games, warriors test their might in fierce contests, all while the city thrums with the energy of the Beastlands. By nightfall, the tone shifts to a more sensual celebration with Ishtar’s Embrace, where lovers, old and new, come together to celebrate beauty and passion. The climax is the Dance of Storm and Flame, a breathtaking display of raw, chaotic energy where fire dancers and storm-callers join forces to perform before a city enraptured by the primal pulse of the universe.

Mysterious Nature of the Ziggurats

What few realize is that the ziggurats do not simply emit energy; they also absorb it. While this helps maintain balance across the planes, it also draws attention from malevolent beings, corruptive forces, and ancient evils that linger just outside the boundaries of the material world. The ziggurats are alive, in a sense, reacting to both the influx of celestial energies and the intentions of those who seek to control them.

The leaders of Seregon, following the path laid by their corrupted predecessor Yaxun B'alam, have allowed the darker aspects of these energies to take root, explaining the city's descent into corruption. Philosophers and scholars argue that the ziggurats act as mirrors, reflecting the nature of those who reside in the city—whether that be goodness, ambition, or malevolence. The question remains: is Seregon’s fate tied to the will of its people, or to the unknowable forces of the planes themselves?

In this way, Seregon stands at the heart of a cosmic balancing act. The festivals are not just celebrations, but acts of control, designed to channel the wild energies of the ziggurats and ensure that the city survives—at least, for another year.
