A century ago, Maarten van der Zee was a skilled and ambitious sailor in the thriving port city of Seregon. As the Amber Fever epidemic tore through the population, Maarten found his ship pressed into service as a quarantine vessel, ferrying the infected to distant islands in a desperate attempt to contain the plague. Though Maarten performed his duties with diligence, the grim cargo and the suffering of the afflicted weighed heavily on him and his crew.
During one such voyage, a massive storm swept Maarten’s ship off course. Buffeted by relentless winds and mountainous waves, the vessel’s anchor snagged on an unseen obstruction far below, dragging the ship and its crew into the crushing depths. Maarten died clinging to the helm, his final thoughts consumed by guilt for failing to save his crew and the innocent lives in his care.
