Jeweled Skull of Nergal

The Jeweled Skull of Nergal is a macabre relic crafted from a humanoid skull, its surface set with glittering gemstones that glimmer like trapped stars. Inscribed upon its surface are glyphs and runes, written in a lost language said to predate humanity itself. These markings glow faintly when the artifact's power is invoked, pulsing like a heartbeat of malice. The skull emanates a quiet, bone-deep chill and carries a faint, sickly-sweet aroma of decay.

The skull is not a weapon but a symbol of the Wizards of the Jeweled Skull, the necromantic cabal that wields it as a focus for their unholy power. Legends claim that the loss of the skull would spell the unraveling of the cabal, shattering their unity and power.

The artifact is not stationary, however; it seems to choose its own fate, slipping from hand to hand, leaving ruin in its wake. Those who possess it find their ambitions accelerated and their flaws magnified.

Lore

  • Origin: Said to have fallen from the stars in ancient times, the skull is thought to be a fragment of Nergal’s own dark essence. It landed on Elephant Island, where the Janni sorcerer-kings used its power to dominate their rivals. When their reign fell to ruin, the skull was cast into the sea, only to be dredged up centuries later. It changed hands through thieves, kings, and merchants until the Wizards of the Jeweled Skull claimed it as the foundation of their order.
  • Prophecies: The Scrolls of Skelos, penned by a blind seer, foretells that the skull's disappearance would lead to the Wizards’ downfall, as well as awaken an ancient cosmic force long held dormant within the artifact.
