Shield of Amonis
Artifact, Legendary (requires attunement)
A radiant segment of The Octad Scepter, the Shield of Amonis is not a literal shield but a piece of the shattered artifact shaped by potent magic into a beacon of divine and arcane protection. It pulses with protective energy, forming layers of nearly impenetrable wards that safeguard its bearer. This power comes at a cost, especially in the surreal and dangerous environment of the Dreamlands.
Game Mechanics of the Shield of Amonis
1. Impenetrable Wards
The Shield of Amonis creates powerful magical protections, represented by the following effects:
- Globe of Invulnerability (1/Day): As an action, the wielder can cast Globe of Invulnerability (DC 18). This magical sphere negates the effects of lower-level spells attempting to harm or affect the wielder or those within the sphere.
- Counterspell (1/Day): When the wielder sees a creature casting a spell, they can use their reaction to cast Counterspell (DC 18).
Additionally, while attuned to the Shield of Amonis:
- The wielder has advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects.
- The wielder is immune to divination magic that would reveal their location or intent, as though under the effects of Nondetection at all times.
2. Enhanced Divination
The Shield of Amonis amplifies the wielder's ability to glimpse potential threats, enhancing their divination abilities as follows:
- The wielder can cast Divination once per day without requiring material components.
- When casting Divination or Scrying, the wielder gains a +2 bonus to any rolls required for the spell’s success or clarity.
- As a bonus action, the wielder can activate the shield to gain a premonition of danger, granting the following benefits for 1 minute:
- Advantage on initiative rolls.
- Advantage on Perception checks to detect hidden creatures or objects.
- Cannot be surprised.
Costs in the Dreamlands
The Dreamlands impose unique and severe consequences on the wielder of the Shield of Amonis:
Erosion of Identity: The Dreamlands warp reality and perception, and prolonged use of the shield’s magic can fray Vel Serath’s sense of self. Each day the shield’s powers are used in the Dreamlands, Vel Serath must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, he suffers one level of exhaustion and becomes plagued by vivid hallucinations of alternate futures, which may manifest as disadvantage on Charisma (Persuasion) and Intelligence (Arcana) checks until his next long rest.
Drain on Vitality: The Dreamlands’ surreal nature demands a price for the shield’s power. Each time Vel casts Globe of Invulnerability or Counterspell while in the Dreamlands, he takes 2d10 psychic damage. This damage cannot be reduced or avoided.
Attraction of Cosmic Beings: The shield’s radiant energy acts as a beacon to Dreamland entities. Each time its divination-enhancing powers are used, there is a 10% chance that a hostile Dreamlands entity (e.g., a Nightmare Spinner, Gug, or Hound of Tindalos) becomes aware of the wielder’s presence and attempts to track them.
Narrative Impact
The Shield of Amonis is both a boon and a burden. Its unparalleled power shields Vel Serath from his enemies and grants him foresight to evade danger, but the toll it exacts in the Dreamlands creates vulnerabilities. Overuse of the shield risks drawing enemies to him or shattering his composure, forcing him to carefully weigh when and where to use its immense magic.
In combat and intrigue, the shield’s protective wards make Vel Serath a nearly untouchable figure, but his reliance on it hints at the fragility beneath his strength, a fragility that Van Droth and other enemies may seek to exploit. The artifact’s dual nature adds a layer of complexity to Vel Serath’s character and his actions within the Dreamlands and beyond.
