Tharok Moonfang: The Gorilla King

Gorilla King

Tharok the Moonfang, Gorilla King of Chak Lu’um

Appearance:
Tharok is a towering figure of raw muscle and primal grace. His jet-black fur is marred by streaks of silver, not from age but from the moon’s touch during the fateful ritual that crowned him king. His amber eyes burn with fierce intelligence, and his tusk-like canines glint with an otherworldly shimmer, earning him the name Moonfang. Draped in ceremonial bone-and-hide armor, Tharok wears the bloodstained pelt of his defeated predecessor as a mantle, a grim reminder of the price of rulership.

Backstory:
Tharok’s ascension is a tale woven with blood, moonlight, and dark bargains. Long ago, the Sentinels of Seregon, an enigmatic druidic order dedicated to balance and primal power, selected him for a great ritual to restore order to Chak Lu’um. They sought a ruler with the strength of the wild and the wisdom to temper it—a leader who could guide the jungle’s denizens away from their blood-soaked legacy.

The ritual, however, took an unexpected turn. The Sentinels’ connection to the natural world was usurped by Angazhan, the Demon Lord of Beasts. As the pale moon rose over the ziggurats, Angazhan’s influence flooded the ceremony, imbuing Tharok with unbridled cunning, strength, and sentience. Tharok was reborn, a creature both of the jungle and the abyss, torn between the virtuous teachings of his creators and the insidious whispers of his demonic patron.

Internal Struggles:
Tharok rules with a conflicted heart. The Sentinels of Seregon speak through dreams, urging him to bring unity and justice to the jungle’s fractured tribes. *Tailyn Blithe (Jay), the enigmatic wizard who believes in Tharok’s potential for greatness, sends him daily magical messages of encouragement, offering wisdom and solace. Tharok yearns to confide in Tailyn, to reveal the weight of his crown and the harsh choices he faces—but he dares not, fearing betrayal or misunderstanding.

Meanwhile, Angazhan’s influence lingers in every decision. The Totem of Angazhan, nestled beneath his throne, constantly tempts him with visions of absolute dominion and primal chaos. Each sacrifice offered to the demon lord’s name strengthens the bond, and Tharok wrestles with whether to accept this power to secure his kingdom or reject it to preserve his soul.

Role as King:
Tharok is neither wholly tyrant nor savior. His reign is marked by brutal pragmatism—alliances forged in blood, justice meted out with ferocity, and a vision of peace overshadowed by the realities of his savage domain. He strives to rebuild the ziggurats’ faded glory while reigning in the chaotic bloodlust of his subjects, knowing that failure means the city’s—and his own—descent into ruin.

Key Locations of Chak Lu’um and Tharok’s Realm

The Ziggurats of White Stone

The city’s ancient monuments rise like skeletal sentinels from the jungle, glistening under the moonlight. Tharok’s court holds sway here, with the ziggurats serving as places of both governance and ritual. The largest, crowned by the High Throne of the Gorilla King, symbolizes the harsh duality of his rule—power gained through both wisdom and violence.

The High Throne and the Totem of Angazhan

The granite throne is both a seat of power and a prison of influence. Angazhan’s totem lies directly beneath, its malevolent aura seeping into Tharok’s every decree. When sitting upon the throne, Tharok feels the crushing weight of responsibility and the darker promise of Angazhan’s unyielding strength.

Angazhan’s Oracle and the Bridge of Cages

This riverside site serves as both a warning and a spectacle. Rituals performed here reinforce Tharok’s connection to his demonic benefactor, though each sacrifice deepens his internal torment. The Bridge of Cages looms overhead, its dangling prisoners a grim testament to the price of rebellion.

The Chasm of Screams

A cursed abyss beneath the High Throne, the Chasm of Screams exhales a toxic mist that twists the mind and body. Even Tharok fears its depths, for it is said that those consumed by the chasm become instruments of Angazhan’s will.

The Temple of the Toad

Though Tharok loathes the Temple of Gogunta and its grotesque practices, he tolerates its presence to placate the jungle’s more devoutly wicked factions. The temple’s shadow looms as a potential threat to Tharok’s authority—a reminder that his rule is far from absolute.

Tharok’s Legacy in the Making

Tharok the Moonfang walks the razor’s edge between salvation and damnation. To his people, he is both a savior and a tyrant, embodying the brutal strength needed to survive in the jungle. Legends of his reign are already taking root, whispered from tribe to tribe, each tale adding to the mythos of the Gorilla King. Will he ascend as a true unifier, or will Angazhan’s will pull him into the abyss?

The answer lies in Tharok’s choices—and whether the Moonfang can carve his own path amidst the shadows of gods and demons.
