Livery: Van Gade’s Jungle Beasts

This tired-looking building sags under the weight of years and weather. Peeling green paint clings stubbornly to parts of the warped timber walls, but large stretches have given up the fight, exposing gray wood darkened with jungle rot. A wide porch stretches along the front of the structure, chairs neatly arranged against the wall. its boards warped but intact. A fenced walkway, half-choked with weeds and manure, leads around the side toward the animal paddocks.

Out front, a mud-caked little boy sits on the steps, using a broken bit of reins as a toy bridle for a stick. His face is dirt-smeared, his clothing torn and mended too many times to count — but his eyes are bright, curious, and wary of strangers.

The smell confirms what the nose already knows: this is the village stable. The air is thick with the scent of damp straw, sweat, and dinosaur dung. Much of the yard has been trampled into thick mud, and buzzing insects circle lazily through the haze.

Despite the rundown appearance, there's a strange sense of quiet order here — someone, clearly, is keeping things running.

🪖 Combat Note (for DMs)

Axe Beaks are CR 1/4 creatures with solid speed and dangerous beak attacks. They make excellent light cavalry mounts for wilderness patrols or ambush-heavy cultists. Hakken and Vechta, being bonded, panic if separated — use this as a flavorful combat complication or roleplaying opportunity.

📝 Special Rules

  • Rented mounts must be returned in good health. Loss of a creature results in a forfeit of deposit (full price).

  • Kilian will not sell or rent Nula or Nula’s Boy, his prized triceratops pair.

  • Payment accepted in coin, or occasionally in trade: rare herbs, monster parts, or good stories (at Kilian’s discretion).

  • Stable gossip comes free, but only if you ask the right questions.

Mated Axe Beak Pair

🪶 Hakken & Vechta – Mated Axe Beak Pair

"Don't ride them unless you're ready to bleed… or bond."
—Kilian van Gade

🦤 Hakken

Large beast, unaligned
Male Axe Beak – "The Brawler"

Armor Class: 13 (natural armor)
Hit Points: 42 (5d10 + 15)
Speed: 50 ft.

STR 16 (+3)
DEX 14 (+2)
CON 16 (+3)
INT 2 (–4)
WIS 12 (+1)
CHA 6 (–2)

Skills: Perception +3
Senses: Passive Perception 13
Languages: Understands simple commands from Kilian
Challenge: 1/2 (100 XP)

🦴 Traits

Aggressive Charge. If Hakken moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a Beak attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 5 (1d10) slashing damage.

Mate Bond – Vechta. If Vechta is reduced to 0 HP or targeted by a harmful effect within 60 feet, Hakken flies into a frenzy. For 1 minute, he has advantage on attack rolls and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical weapons. This ends early if he is knocked unconscious or Vechta regains HP.

Trained Mount. Hakken does not require an action to be controlled when ridden by Kilian or a trusted handler. He will not allow anyone else to mount him unless properly trained or bonded.

🗡️ Actions

Beak. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 9 (1d10 + 3) slashing damage.

🎭 Loyalty Quirks

  • Hates fire and loud noises. May become spooked unless DC 12 Animal Handling is made.

  • Protective of Vechta. Will block line of sight or place himself between her and danger.

  • Loves sugarfruit. Offering one grants advantage on Animal Handling checks for 1 hour.

🦤 Vechta

Large beast, unaligned
Female Axe Beak – "The Silent Knife"

Armor Class: 14 (natural armor)
Hit Points: 38 (5d10 + 10)
Speed: 50 ft.

STR 14 (+2)
DEX 16 (+3)
CON 14 (+2)
INT 2 (–4)
WIS 14 (+2)
CHA 8 (–1)

Skills: Perception +4, Stealth +3
Senses: Passive Perception 14
Languages: Understands whistles and subtle cues from Kilian
Challenge: 1/2 (100 XP)

🦴 Traits

Quiet Step. Vechta has advantage on Stealth checks made to move through underbrush or jungle terrain.

Mate Bond – Hakken. If Hakken is reduced to 0 HP or taken away from her, Vechta becomes unnaturally quiet and enters a stalking mode. She can Dash as a bonus action, and her Beak attack deals an extra 1d6 damage once per turn against the target that harmed him.

Trained Mount. Vechta is smoother to ride than Hakken and will accept a competent, calm rider. She requires a DC 13 Animal Handling check to allow anyone other than Kilian to mount her safely.

🗡️ Actions

Beak. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 8 (1d10 + 2) slashing damage.

🎭 Loyalty Quirks

  • Only responds to soft-spoken commands. Shouting at her triggers a DC 14 Wisdom (Animal Handling) check to calm.

  • Will not leave Hakken’s side voluntarily. If forced apart, makes escape attempts until reunited.

  • Drawn to music. May calm if a bard plays a soft tune.

🐣 Mated Pair Mechanics (Optional Rule)

If Hakken and Vechta are within 30 feet of each other, they both gain:

  • +1 to AC (instinctive positioning)

  • +10 ft. movement speed (matched pace)

  • Advantage on saving throws against fear

This bond can be broken temporarily if one is incapacitated or restrained.
