Born Jan Van Buren and raised in a Puritan town in Massachusetts. No one in the town was aware of their male gender except for the priest who had recorded their birth and baptism but subsequently died in 1712. The townspeople assumed that due to their feminine features, lack of breeching as they had gotten older, and their practice of midwifery along with their mother, meant they were female. Nowadays, they would have been diagnosed with partial androgen insensitivity. Their father had passed away when they were 7 years old and their mother, Leida, made a decent living in the practice. Leida took them on as an apprentice, changing their name to Janna, and perpetuating the belief that Briar was female in order to gain the town’s sympathy for two struggling women after having lost their land in a land dispute after her husband’s death. Leida agreed to move to a new town in need of her services in exchange for lodging wherein she would later meet and remarry Abner Mansfield who was verbally and physically abusive. In attempting to protect themselves from being sexually assaulted, they accidently killed a young noble man. They were hung for murder and accused of witchcraft but were saved by Clyde.
