As the new school year starts in Cody, Wyoming, three sisters attend to their first day of school. As a Rift appears and the school gets blown up, they get involved with time travel, as they are rewound to the same point in the morning before school and the explosion. They are approached by Alaric who is trying to investigate the time distortion and keep them out of sight from other interested parties.

Two days later, an accident happens as Abigail Winters burns her parents and sets her house ablaze which attracts the attention of the mysterious killer that the Fowler sisters saw at the day of the event killing another mysterious stranger. All the while other weird events happen around them, Hannah is approached by one of her school colleagues that is both behaving strangely but also has a crow perched on his shoulder that no one else other than them can see. Their math professor, Morgan Jones is somehow always involved as well suspiciously prepared for things. But more importantly, the looming Homecoming event is an ever present concern as the high schoolers need to start learning how to balance their lives with the increasing supernatural phenomena around them.

As Alaric intervenes, killing Karen before she could harm the kids - the new sorcerers take their first steps into discovering their powers.

Not all newly awakened sorcerers have good intentions, as Damien Cross is intent on using his powers to change the world, as the others are trying to talk him out of it.

The following days before homecoming are turbulent, as Hannah manages to talk Damien down, while eventually Alaric provides them with a place that can act as a hidden base for both meeting and discussing as well as training, away from the eyes of the public - nicknamed it the Dark Tower.

In between that training sessions, Emily met Tom the local know-it-all, as he triggered her magical abilities by simply being in her presence for some reason. Damien applied his bargain based magic to objects, instilling conditions of use for powerful perks as he augmented a revolver Hannah gave him.

At homecoming, they ran into more people with weird abilities or that displayed signs of being affected by the Rift: Zayne, Emilia, Amber as well as a mysterious assassin from the Stone, Maisy, who also seem to be able to perceive Jackdaw. Zayne also mentioned his friend Caleb, as the group realizes that there are quite a few special people running around. During this event, Emily was completely disinterested in finding others, as she danced and had fun with her date leaving the work mostly to Damien and Hannah, as even Kassandra and Abigail, after finding Zayne hanged out, eventually making out.

While not being the most vigilant, Damien, Hannah, Kassandra and Abigail did manage to find others, as the membership of the Dark Tower expanded. Maisy also managed to talk with them, as well as with Alaric which prompted her to help them out and buy them some time against the Stone agents.

While the Stone is distracted due to Maisy's influence, the teenagers had about a year to prepare on how to deal with the assassins and get a good handle on their powers. Soon after homecoming Solomon joined them to guard them against future threats, as the kids helped him with his English lessons.

As three months passed, they reached new levels of understanding as Kassandra, Hannah and Emily helped the others to better understand themselves, while also managing the increasing tensions between Tom and everyone else.

Alaric drops by as he asks them to help Onyx integrate with human society, seeing how they helped Solomon previously.

After several months of training and assisting others adjust to their new lives, tragedy struck in the summer of 1977. The Fowler siblings were flung across the multiverse minutes before a tactical strike from Simon and his Jagdhund, specialized soldiers equipped with advanced weaponry and equipment. A 150 soldiers alongside Simon himself raided the town of Cody, Wyoming and caused untold destruction and death.

Their goal was to eliminate all the mages and their allies. Many casualties occurred that day, as local law enforcement tried to hold them back. A separate team was sent to attack those hiking in the woods, but only found two members of the household, which they promptly executed.

The Dark Tower stood their ground, as a large scale battle enveloped the town destroying most of it in the process. Local Stone agents quickly sent word, which prompted Alaric to intervene and provide aid. Between him and the others in town, the fight was won even if at a great cost. 

This attack would be remembered by the survivors as one of the darkest days of their lives. Around a third of the people died, as hundreds were killed during the fighting and many others passed away later on from sever injuries. Alaric used his connections within the FBI, CIA and Stone to put the are in lockdown. Survivors were compensated for their loss, but were forbidden from leaving or interacting with any outsiders.

Cody was turned into a military base, aiding in making sure that information would not leak and outsiders would be kept out. The tragic fuel depot explosions would be reported to the news as the locals would be taught about their new lifestyle.

More than a year later since the attack, the Dark Tower became an officially recognized entity by the The Tower of Magic. The first one to pass the exams was Damien, followed the following years by Tom, Amber, Caleb, Emilia and Abigail.

Damien became the foreign relations guy. Handling negotiations between the two towers, as well as any dealings with the Stone. Morgan and Tom focused on finding ways for them to protect themselves from similar attacks in the future, as Capt. Troy provided insight due to his military knowledge.

Emilia, Amber, Caleb and Zayne while not official Stone agents, did go around the globe, in the years after their admissions within the Tower of Magic, assisting Alaric's teams in dealing with Rifts. As such they gained much needed field experience working underneath individuals such as Wacław, Adam and Liên to name a few.

During this process Ed aided the members more indirectly, providing information and sharing his experience. Another great boon was that Damien managed to secure the aid of Caithe one of the Archamges of the Tower, as she took personal interest in their development, denying Ed's parents in their requests to assist directly.

By 1983, the Dark Tower was a well established entity within Alaric's inner circle, as Onyx and Haydée often took trips to visit.
