Backstory

Cleo Ramos was born with a golden spoon and the height of luxury. Cleo’s earliest memories are of boardroom meetings held in her nursery, her parents’s voices heard on conference calls instead of lullabies, and nanny-cams replacing hugs.

At eleven, Cleo entered a private boarding school known for nurturing “well‑rounded prodigies.” The academy was less a place of learning and more a high‑stakes social arena where families sent their children to network and, more importantly, to keep an eye on one another. Here, Cleo quickly learned the art of performance—the perfect laugh, the perfect smirk, the perfect “I don’t care” attitude. With the feeling of being dumped by her mother here along with the building resentment of her life, it is here where Cleo’s acts of rebellion began.

  • “It’s not my problem,” is her mantra
  • Distrustful of people and their intentions
  • Fiercely independent and determined to survive on her own
  • Has a hard time forming connections
  • Tring to learn to properly control her powers, while keeping them secret from anyone
  • Wants to come off as more mature and cool
  • Tries to act nonchalant because she thinks cool mature people act like

The origin of her powers - there was a party being advertised as a once in a lifetime event happening outside of the school grounds, that anybody whose anybody had to be there. So naturally, Cleo and her so-called friends had to attend. The underground party was located out on the mountains on condemned property, which made it all the more alluring.

With a DJ setup, rave lights and mysterious drinks, everything was going well before the cops showed up, causing the partygoers to panic and make a run for it so as to not get caught. In a panic Cleo and a few others fled into the abandoned mountain caves where they fell into the deeper caverns.

  • Cleo and a few students got lost in the cavers for 2 days
  • Most of her memory of this time was fumbling around in the dark full of fear and panic
  • Cleo and another student (Rosie) came across each other and tried to navigate through the caves together. They stumbled across  another section of the cave filled with water and strange vegetation, which they used to fill their bellies and take some rest
  • Cleo woke up to Rosie screaming in pain and having what appeared to be a seizure, Cleo tried to help but her, then unknown, powers only made Rosie’s suffering worse
  • Rosie died in that cave
  • Cleo, heavily traumatized, eventually found the exit from the caves where a rescue team had been searching for the missing children. Cleo had been the last to be found and Rosie’s body was recovered. Though not in the strange tropical environment Cleo had described but an empty enclave of dirt and blood

Through publicly the death of Rosie (which were recorded as an accident from dehydration and possibly falling in the caverns) and the number of students left unsupervised was kept more on the quiet side and away from the public at large. A number of students, including Cleo. were expelled from the school.

  • Cleo left at one of Mother’s half-empty, on Cleo’s insistence, houses to recover and relax and realistically stay out of trouble
  • She noticed her powers rather quickly when one day she woke up with Rosie’s face staring back at her in the mirror
  • Cleo lives in fear that her abilities will be discovered which would only destroy not only her life but possibly even her mother’s
  • She wears gloves, using her traumatic incident as the reason for it or using her attitude to keep them from asking too many questions.
