The Bay of Broken Tides was a wide inlet on the coast of western Commona, bordered by the Murkmire Marshlands to the west and the fang-like region of Kossuth to the east. Its waters were crowded with spires of rock that jutted from the seabed in uneven clusters, some barely breaking the surface at high tide and others standing well above the height of a ship’s mast. Swells rolling in from the Sea of the Maw broke apart against these rocks long before they reached shore, so the waves that finally washed onto the bay’s beaches were far smaller and gentler than those of the open sea beyond.
The same formations that calmed the bay made it difficult to sail, especially closer to the bay's coastline. Larger vessels kept to the few channels wide enough to pass between the spires, while fishermen and smaller craft could work its sheltered inner waters with relative ease.
