Gwerinbryg

Gwerinbryg

The Gwerinbryg are a collection of unusual races that hail from the twin peaks of Sirmynydd and Larravonti. As the oldest species from the Continent one may expect them to be more widespread than they presently are, but like several species, history was unkind to them. They exhibit animalistic physiology, usually humanoid, with the head and fur of their associated animal. There was an uncomfortable overlap here with the animistic deities worshipped by the Hythnetic tribes that dominated the old world, and the Gwerinbryg were cast as abominable, cursed beings and heavily persecuted during this time.

The arrival of the Gnomans saw this conflict put down with Hythness now on the back foot and Cathirianism in the ascendancy, but as creatures of magic, they were corralled. It had long been observed that these creatures had an unusual, even supernatural bond, with the mountains and the Gnomans capitalised on this, drawing them back to their ancestral homes and isolating them. It was only later, after the collapse that they would emerge again, into a world that had by and large forgotten them.

Integration was tentative and in the more urbanised south, the Gwerinbryg chose to remain with their mountain and the pockets of wilderness that they could seek refuge. In the north however, the lessor dogma of religion and the rebuilding following the Galist rebellions saw their unique traits championed, at least among the Cathirian or atheistic nations. A rule of dispersal is typically that the further west one travels from the Bulleric mountains, the fewer Gwerinbryg they will find.
