Title(s): The Duchy of Thornhill
Moratum Grantee: General Thomas Gattly
Current Head: Lady Irene Gattly, Lord Marshal of Palingvyre
The House of Gattly was elevated from the commons in 1187 at the end of the 1st Leodamite War. After the House of Gromly had failed to fulfil their obligations to the Crown to provide a suitable, well trained garrison from West Gromborough the general who they would ultimately fail was elevated as their successor.
Darmia nobility are rarity in comparison to their human counterparts, and while this means the endemic Darmia noble houses tend to be heavily interlinked, it can be a hostile environment for newcomers. The times when there was any material difference with how the two races are treated, but the mindset of the Darmia has always been collective responsibility and cohesion.
A new house threatens the reputation of them all therefore, and this must have been prominent in the mind of King Leonard when he chose a Darmia family as the new house. The Gattlys however, proved a secure selection. With a proud tradition of military achievement, all children in the Gattly household serve in the Royal Army and this has become a rite of passage within the household. After being ennobled it became necessary to complete this service under aliases so as to avoid favouritism, and the Gattly’s hold the positions of their family members in great secrecy, only informing the absolute necessary parties. This has two benefits in the eyes of the other Darmia, the first being that the Gattlys are directly steered away from internal politics, and so rarely tread on toes, and even when they may have the opportunity to, the alias’ they use make it incredibly to trace it back to a noble family.
