As the fight commences under the critical eyes of Master Pearl and Grandmaster Vacek Polyakov, Adrian, from his semi-paralyzed position, instructs the team to focus fire and yells out what type of attack is the better for each elemental. Labrat turn and shots lighting at the water elemental, hoping to see if it takes extra damaged. Irdien immediately jumps it, and between the two of them has defeated the Water. Next, Air and Earth attack Sirona and L, while Fire goes after Zack Rose. Labrat makes sure to help defend Sirona; however, Sirona does get badly hurt after the Earth's assault, and Adrian yells to the group to protect her. Irdien heals Sirona with her ear cuff and switches places with Zack Rose, who flees into the fountain to get away from the fire. Irdien fights like a whirlwind of blades, cutting the Fire elemental down to size.
Meanwhile, Rose pops out from behind the fountain statue and cast a spell that holds the air elemental in place in the sky. His weird-looking familiar flies up and blasts lightning at it after having copied the power from L. The group keeps fighting, L and Sirona trying to subdue Earth, while Rose holds down Air, and shots force damage on the remaining elementals. Finally, the Fire elemental, almost dead, surges, casting flames and molted rock around it. The flames ignite Labrat as Sirona's war pick finally break Earth into a pile of mundane rocks. She turns to L, healing her and trying to put out the flames. It fails, but L manages to take care of them herself. She turns around towards the fire and repays the favor by slicing it in two. The fire elemental falls like a heap of hot sludge to the ground. The Air breaks free and starts swirling ominously. Zack pulls out a scull of his grandmother and asks it for advice, but he gets nothing beneficial out of their exchange. Irdien throws her magical dagger at the last elemental still high in the air. As it flies to its target, Irdien blinks out of existence and end up at the hilt of her blade. She swings at the creature before landing perfectly and gracefully on the ground. At this point, the whirlwind touch ground as well, almost knocking them all over. With a joint effort, L defeats the air, and the courtyard is again calm and safe.
The Grandmaster urges the fighters to line up, and Adrian is given the antidote to his condition. Vacek is a bit baffled, saying that the group broke the test and that he needs to think this over with Pearl before he officially makes Adrian a journeyman. He also says that the group is way too qualified to enlist in the school; if they so wish, he would like to make them honorary monster hunters after taking a few complimentary courses.
During this exchange, Jak decides to join the group after having watched them fight from the sidelines. He makes eye contact with Irdien as he takes out a small bundle and drops it on the grass. Then he turns into his wisp form and flies away. Irdien quickly walks over and retrieves the package. It contains two letters, one for her and one for Sirona. A pouch of Wolfsbain herbs for Adrian and the magical communication cards for L. The letters hold no information, just poems for them indicating an abrupt but sorrowful goodbye.
Irdien says nothing and leaves the courtyard, entering the building. Sirona is also speechless and in shock, showing her letter to Adrian.
The joyous occasion is suddenly severely dampened, but as Rose leaves, Adrian thanks him for the help and tells him that he will buy him a drink later.
Nobody upstages Jak
