Description and Atmosphere:
Fortgate, a name that resonates with the screams of battle and the echo of defiant horns, stands sentinel on a low, strategic hill at the edge of the plains. It isn't a soaring mountaintop keep, but a sprawling behemoth, a city unto itself. From each side of the fortress itself, two impossibly long walls, known as the Great Divide, stretch far into the distance like the bony arms of a slumbering giant, together with Fortgate, separating the Highlands from the mountain passages leading to Edge Capital.
Within the fort, a labyrinth of buildings unfurls. Vast barracks, their floors worn smooth by generations of marching boots. Stables reeking of straw and leather. Workshops where engineers toil to craft armament, and fletchers who bind feathers to shafts.
Crossing this fortified hive is the High Road, wide enough for at least three wagons abreast, it slices through from the sundown side of the Highlands until crossing Fortgate towards Edge Capital. Not far, at Rampart (Fortgate City), merchants ply their trade, pilgrims huddle over crackling fires, and soldiers in polished breastplates march with grim purpose.
Outside, the wild waters of the Gagular River twist and churn, a fast-flowing serpent guarding the eastern face of the fortress. Its roar echoes through the walls. For years Fortgate held the line against the Kahuree raiders, nomads of the Khuree Desert, whose blood runs as hot as the sands and whose swords sing a song of death. Countless battles have been fought on this ground, each scar on the walls a testament to the fortress's enduring strength.
