The Rescue of the Karlstains

Side Quest

During their visit to the town of Oakheart, the party heard a large horn being blown in the morning during their morning meals. They saw guards and soldiers rush to the Lord's home to which the party soon followed. When they arrived they saw Craig Mountainbreaker address his men who raillied and marched from Oakheart. The party spoke with Craig who then informed the party that he had recieved word that the Lord of Riverend, William Karlstain had been taken by the forces of Redmond. Which is where Craig sent his men, to secure Riverend and find William and his wife.

The party stepped up and offered their aid to which Craig felt there was no need but in order to secure Craig as an ally the party pushed to help out. They had a single teleport scroll that was able to place them in Riverend in an instant, before the arrival of Craig's forces. He approved by giving the party one of his pinned house sigils as proof to William that they were sent by him, and his advisor Olof Beardloaf made a quick prayer to the Great Oak of Oakheart after he had forseen bad things for the party. The tree granted them three gifts to help them on their journey. It released the Great Oak Staff which was given to Rayenne and the Windbreaker which had been sealed within the Oak for a long time. It also left behind a Bag of Magical Acorns. Bartimaeus managed to acquire his swords, the Tidal Twins from the blacksmiths before their departure. What awaits them in Riverend is unknown, what Olof forsaw will be revealed to the party sooner or later however they are equipped with magical boons.

Noble Plot Revealed

After arriving in Riverend the party discovered the city being empty apart from its Redmond occupiers. After some careful and some not so careful planning, they eventually managed to reach the Karlstain Manor. There they ran into Ivon Eisenhorn and a group of Bison Knights who were preventing the party from reaching Lord Karlstain. As they fought Varis rushed behind to reach the hallway where the Lord was presumed to be. As Varis came around the corner of the hallway he quickly dodged an incoming arrow and got a glimpse of a young lady and the dragonborn Tyranoth Redgast before they vanished into thin air from a teleport circle. After the others had fought and bested Ivon they had a moment of clearity and settled that they were on the same side.

They found out that William Karlstain had been taken to Redmond by orders of the Baron Oliver Rocks. Afterwards Ivon left with his men and the remaining Redmond forces from Riverend. The party discovered some letters from Oliver which indicated that this was all planned. Everything appared to have been staged as a kidnapping to hide their true intent. William had been warned about Oliver's plan and had evacuated all citizens from Riverend to avoid any unwanted conflict. The plan worked out as intended as work reached other Lords and the Church about William's kidnapping.

Later on in the evening the party gathered supplies in the city before leaving Riverend and found themselves back on the road.
