The Free Lance [Contract]

Hireling

Free Lances, also known as Freelancers, are skilled warriors who operate independently, unaffiliated with any noble house or military organization. They are commonly found in the eastern continent of Agera, particularly in the land of Rivermond, where their services are highly sought after. These warriors are driven by financial considerations, valuing monetary gain above the traditional codes of honor and chivalry.

Free Lances undergo rigorous training in the art of combat from a young age. Many start their journey as common soldiers or knights, honing their skills on the battlefield. They learn various combat techniques, including swordplay, lance handling, and horsemanship. Additionally, they often receive specialized training in tournament combat, where they compete against other skilled warriors.

The unique aspect of Free Lances lies in their independence. Unlike knights who serve a noble house or soldiers who fight under a specific banner, Free Lances are free agents. They have the flexibility to choose their clients and contracts based on their own interests and financial gain. This autonomy grants them the freedom to travel and engage in diverse ventures, ranging from battles to grand tournaments.

Strengths

  • Versatile Combatants: Free Lances are proficient in various forms of combat, both mounted and on foot. They excel in wielding weapons such as swords, lances, and polearms.
  • Superior Horsemanship: Mounted on powerful steeds, Free Lances gain enhanced mobility and increased battlefield awareness. They can maneuver swiftly and strike with force, making them a formidable force on the battlefield.
  • Experience in Tournaments: Having competed in numerous grand tournaments, Free Lances have honed their skills in jousting, melee combat, and other martial contests. Their familiarity with the tournament setting gives them an advantage when facing opponents in such events.

Weaknesses

  • Lack of Loyalty: Free Lances are motivated primarily by personal gain, which can make them unpredictable and unreliable allies. They may abandon a contract or switch sides if they perceive a better opportunity elsewhere, potentially causing distrust among their employers.
  • Limited Resources: As independent warriors, Free Lances often lack the support and resources provided by a noble house or kingdom. They must rely on their own wealth, acquired through contracts, to maintain their equipment and sustain themselves.
  • Disregard for Chivalry: Unlike traditional knights, Free Lances prioritize financial considerations over honor and chivalric ideals. They may engage in questionable tactics or take morally ambiguous contracts, which can lead to strained relationships with more noble-minded individuals.

Abilities:

  • Mounted Combatant: The Free Lance has advantage on saving throws to avoid falling off their mount, and it can force an attack targeting its mount to target itself instead.

  • Warhorse Companion: The Free Lance is accompanied by a loyal and well-trained warhorse that fights alongside it. The warhorse has its own set of statistics and attacks.

  • Unyielding Spirit: Once per long rest, when the Free Lance is reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, it can make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a success, it instead drops to 1 hit point.

Reactions:

  • Parry: The Free Lance can use its reaction to add 4 to its AC against one melee attack that would hit it.

Actions:

  • Multiattack: The Free Lance makes two melee attacks with its longsword.

  • Longsword: Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage.

  • Lance Thrust: Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8 + 7) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

  • Sweeping Strike: The Free Lance swings its weapon in a wide arc, targeting all creatures within 10 feet of it. Each creature in that area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 12 (2d8 + 3) slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Bonus Actions:

  • Second Wind: The Free Lance regains 1d10 + 10 hit points. It can use this ability once per short rest.

  • Mounted Charge: If the Free Lance moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a lance attack on the same turn, the target takes an additional 14 (4d6) piercing damage.
