Upon uncovering an ancient manuscript from the Dominion Church, Bartimaeus Brightheart learns of the final resting place of Sir Asher Karlstain, a legendary Grail Knight. Inspired by the promise of uncovering long-lost relics and the desire for knowledge, Bartimaeus persuades his companions to set out on an expedition to the now-forgotten city of Vindrik. This once-great metropolis, shrouded in legend, lies abandoned within the perilous region known as Highmarsh.
Highmarsh is a desolate and haunting landscape where sunlight rarely breaks through the heavy clouds. Here, the restless souls of the dead are said to roam freely. As the adventurers prepare for their journey, Rayenne reveals a wooden case containing a cryptic map.
