Necroshroom

Component / Consumable

Necroshroom is a rare and malevolent fungi found in the marshes of Highmarsh, known for its association with death and decay. This pale, spore-producing mushroom typically grows on cadavers, stripped bones, and in places saturated with necrotic energy, such as graveyards, battlefields, and ancient ruins. The cap of the Necroshroom is beige, with a dry texture, and it emits spores that have a dull, almost eerie glow. Due to its association with death and necromancy, the Necroshroom is shunned in most cultures and is typically found only in specific herbalist and alchemist stores, often in secret or under the counter. It is considered contraband in many regions, and its possession can be illegal or taboo.

Market Value:

  • Fresh Necroshroom: 200 gp per fungi
  • Powdered Necroshroom: 300 gp per dose

The Necroshroom is infamous among herbalists and alchemists for its dark properties. Local folklore often paints the fungus as a manifestation of cursed land or a bad omen. Despite its dangerous nature, the Necroshroom is sought after by necromancers and dark alchemists for its ability to enhance necromantic rituals and spells.

Special Features:

  • Spore Emission: In its natural state, the Necroshroom emits spores that drain life from nearby plant life. Plants in close proximity of 10 ft to the Necroshroom suffer disadvantage on Constitution checks and saving throws for 1 hour after contact.
  • Ritual Component: When the Necroshroom is prepared and powdered down, it can be used as a component in a ritual casting of the spell Blight without expending a spell slot. The ritual requires the powdered form of the Necroshroom and takes 10 minutes to perform, involving dark chants and necromantic symbols. Once the ritual is completed, the caster can target a creature within range as if casting the spell normally.
  • Antitoxin and Purge: When dried and prepared into a hot drink, such as tea, the Necroshroom can cleanse the body of poisons or diseases. The drinker must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw; on a success, they are cured of all poisons and diseases. However, the sudden purging effect also deals 2d4 necrotic damage to the drinker as their body expels the toxins violently, potentially causing temporary weakness or sickness.
