Dance of the Cranes

The Dance of the Cranes is an annual cultural festival celebrated along the shores of Nagatsuru Bay. The event marks the peak of the migratory flight of the Sacred Cranes of Nagatsuru, whose elegant forms fill the skies in sweeping patterns that resemble the flow of celestial energies. These cranes are considered sacred in the Nagan Empire, believed to be messengers of Laaos, the Keeper of Order. Their arrival signals a time of peace, prosperity, and spiritual reflection for the people of the Throne Region of Nagadao.

Ceremonies and Rituals:

The festival is marked by a series of elaborate ceremonies:
  • The Crane's Dawn:
At sunrise, shrine barges decorated with lanterns and woven crane feathers drift into the center of Nagatsuru Bay. Priests of Laaos recite blessings, and offerings of rice and plum wine are cast into the water to honor the spirits of the cranes.
  • Dance of Wings:
As the cranes take to the sky, performers in flowing white and gray robes mimic their movements in a choreographed dance. This ritual dance, known as Kakuzan Mai, is performed atop wooden platforms suspended just above the bay’s surface. Drums and flutes accompany the dancers, their footsteps mirroring the cranes' graceful movements.
  • Sky Lantern Release:
At twilight, thousands of lanterns are released from the shores, drifting upwards to symbolize the souls of ancestors and the blessings of the coming season. It is believed that if a lantern is followed by a crane in flight, the person's prayer will be answered.
