Middlefield

Middlefield had been the broad stretch of farmland and open countryside lying between Beast Country to the West (on the other side of Blackfish River), Ashabenford to the East, Northfield to the North (beyond the Moonsea Ride), and Semberholme to the South. It had been one of the most productive regions in Mistledale, defined by long, gently rolling fields, scattered homesteads, and a handful of small rural communities—the largest of which had been Harvest Town. The land had offered wide visibility in every direction, broken only by pockets of trees, low stone fences, and the winding dirt roads that connected its farms to the rest of the dale.

Because Middlefield sat between wilder terrain on one side and the dale’s central trade hub on the other, it had served as a kind of quiet buffer zone. Travelers heading toward Ashabenford had passed through its open country, while those leaving the town had quickly found themselves surrounded by farmland and peaceful meadows. Life there had revolved around agriculture: plowed earth in spring, tall grain in summer, and orderly rows of harvested fields in autumn. Families had lived far enough apart to maintain independence but close enough to rely on one another when dangers or hardships had reached their doors.
