Mushozoku (rank 0): These were students who had not sworn themselves to staying at the dojo.
Gakusei (rank 1): These were students who lived at the dodo and had dedicated themselves to the dojo's hōhō (way).
Hajime (rank 2): The dojo's top student, and next in line to become a sensei or ugoku.
Ugoku (rank 3): Ugoku had earned the choice to become a sensei or roam as a free agent. Senseis and shidōin could choose to become an ukgoku at any time, but required the blessing of the shihan to become a sensei.
Sensei (rank 3): Senseis were the teachers of the dojo, and all became the top of their class before advancing to their rank.
Shidōin (rank 4): The shidōin was the highest-ranked sensei in the dojo, and answered to no one but the Shihan.
Shihan (rank 5): The ruling body of the dojo, the shihan always had final say in all matters relating to the dojo and its members.
