The Broken Spine

The Skršenrbet, translated as Broken Spine, mountains are a formidable and majestic range, consisting of two chains separated by the treacherous Neplodridovi. To the north, the mountains are home to the fearsome frost giants, known for their massive ice fortresses that dot the landscape. These giants, towering and formidable, are said to be masters of the icy terrain, using it to their advantage in both war and trade. Their ice fortresses, massive and imposing, are proof of their strength in the northern mountains.

In contrast, the southern range of the Skršenrbet mountains is shrouded in mystery and legend. Hidden verdant valleys are said to be home to dragons, their scales gleaming in the dappled sunlight that filters through the canopy. However, it is known without doubt that these valleys are inhabited by the sirens and alkonosts, woman-headed bird creatures that are said to waylay travelers in the southern forests of Opsednamesto. These creatures, with their enchanting songs and hypnotic gaze, are both beautiful and deadly, luring unsuspecting travelers to their doom. The southern range of the Skršenrbet mountains is a place of beauty and danger, where myth and reality intertwine in a landscape of breathtaking vistas and hidden perils.

Geography & History

Geography

The northern chain of the Skršenrbet mountains is characterized by massive granite cliffs that soar into the sky, reminiscent of the imposing Ardenroots but on a smaller scale. These cliffs, towering and sheer, dominate the landscape, their impassive faces battered by the relentless winds and icy weather of the northern reaches. Crushing glaciers, remnants of a bygone age, stamp out any chance of thriving valleys or lush vegetation, leaving behind a landscape of stark and unforgiving beauty. The northern chain is a place of raw and untamed wilderness, where the elements reign supreme and only the most savage of creatures can survive.

In contrast, the southern chain of the Skršenrbet mountains, despite its outward appearance of a frozen granite fortress capped with mist, harbors a secret within its rugged peaks. Hidden away among the towering cliffs and icy crags are small, secluded valleys of life. These valleys, sheltered from the harsh elements of the surrounding mountains, are oases of lush vegetation and teeming wildlife. Streams cascade down from the heights, nourishing the valley floor and creating a vibrant tapestry of life amid the frozen granite walls.

History

The Skršenrbet mountains have always been a towering fixture in the landscape of Etomesto, their rugged peaks and sweeping valleys are proof of the enduring power of nature. However, some scholars and historians speculate that these mountains were once part of a single, immense mountain chain that spanned across both Etomesto and its southern continent neighbor, Inis Mona. This theory is supported by geological evidence and similarities in the composition of the mountains, suggesting that they were once joined together in a single, unified range.

Some speculate that ancient peoples once inhabited the Skršenrbet mountains, leaving behind mysterious ruins and artifacts that hint at a long-lost civilization. These ruins, scattered throughout the mountains, have sparked the curiosity of scholars and philosophers alike, who ponder the origins and fate of this mysterious culture. Among the philosophical members of the Skollomanse, there is speculation that this ancient civilization may have played a role in the chaos of the Darkening. They wonder if perhaps this alien culture possessed knowledge or technologies that inadvertently contributed to the cataclysmic events of that dark time. The possibility that the secrets of the past may hold clues to understanding the present is a tantalizing thought, one that drives these thinkers to delve deeper into the mysteries of the Skršenrbet mountains and the ancient peoples who once called them home.

Ecosystem

The northern range of the Skršenrbet mountains is a harsh and barren landscape, with little in the way of an ecosystem. Only the hardiest of life forms, such as lichens, manage to cling to the rocky slopes, while the occasional herd of mammoths grazes at the feet of the mountains, their thick fur providing protection against the biting cold. The harsh conditions of the northern range make it a place of solitude and desolation.

In contrast, the small valley ecosystems of the southern range are temperate and lush, with small forests and meandering streams that provide a sanctuary for a variety of plant and animal life. These valleys are also home to ancient ruins of an unknown people, now dominated as rookeries by the sirens and alkonosts. These woman-headed bird creatures have made their homes among the ruins, using them as a perch from which to watch over their domains and waylay unsuspecting travelers. The valleys of the southern range are a place of hidden beauty and hidden dangers, where the past and present collide in a landscape of mystery and omens.
