The Desert of Ice

In the heart of Etomesto lies Neplodridovi, or Dry Frost to the Monaians, a vast frozen desert and home to sparse few Psoglavi, but seemingly hiding unending hordes of frost and taiga giants. Its name evokes the paradox that defines this strange land. The landscape stretches out in undulating waves of snow, forming rolling hills that gleam under the pale sun. These frost dunes, sculpted by relentless winds, create a mesmerizing pattern of ripples across the icy expanse. The air is crisp, each breath a reminder of the murderous cold that grips this place.

Amidst the stark white, small oases of dry scrubby grass break the constant monotony. These patches, though sparse and hardy, add a touch of life to the otherwise barren scenery. Here, the grass clings tenaciously to the ground, finding sustenance in the shallow pockets of muddy water that dot the terrain. The water, tinged with muck and half-frozen, offers a fleeting glimpse of life in a world dominated by frost.

The sky above Neplodridovi is a canvas of ever-changing hues, from the icy blue of midday to the deep indigo of twilight. As night falls, the auroras dance across the heavens, casting ethereal lights over the frozen desert. The silence is profound, broken only by the occasional whisper of the wind or the distant cry of an unseen creature. Neplodridovi is a place where time seems to stand still, where the harshness of the environment is tempered by its serene beauty.

Geography & History

Geography

Neplodridovi's geography is a study in diametrics, dominated by rolling snow banks and harsh glaciers that sculpt the land during its long, brutal winters. The relentless cold forces these features into formidable formations, where ice and snow stretch as far as the eye can see, creating a monochrome landscape of capable of blinding the viewer.

In the brief respite of summer, the snow recedes to reveal stony rock outcroppings that punctuate the terrain like ancient sentinels. Amid these rocky protrusions, reedy taigas emerge, their sparse vegetation a testament to the land's resilience. The transformation is fleeting, as the land quickly reverts to its frozen state, but during this short interlude, Neplodridovi reveals a glimpse of its hidden layers and rugged lifeforms.

History

According to ancient tales, Neplodridovi was once a thriving and verdant plain, teeming with life and abundant in flora and fauna. Before the Darkening, an enigmatic cataclysm that surrendered the land to eternal winter, it was a paradise of rolling green hills, lush meadows, and crystal-clear rivers. This stark transformation to a frozen desert stands in strange contrast to the Age of Winter in Inis Mona, a realm that supposedly began as a winter-locked world before gradually thawing into a more temperate climate thanks to the coming of the Ardruids. The legends of Neplodridovi's past are whispered among the few who brave its icy expanse, a haunting memory of a lost paradise buried beneath the relentless frost.

Ecosystem & Species

Ecosystem

The ecosystem of Neplodridovi is stark and unforgiving, particularly during the relentless winter months. In this harsh season, life is sparse, with only the hardiest of creatures enduring the icy expanse year-round. Herds of mammoths, their thick fur and formidable size protecting them from the cold, roam the rolling snow banks and harsh glaciers, while reindeer traverse the frozen landscape, their hooves adapted to the icy ground.

As winter loosens its grip and the brief, transient summer arrives, the ecosystem undergoes a fleeting transformation. The snow melts just enough to reveal patches of stony ground and reedy taigas. In this short window, the land upheaves with a burst of life. Foxes emerge from their dens, their sleek forms darting across the rocky outcrops in search of prey. Hares, with their seasonal camouflage, blend into the thawing landscape, while raptorial birds soar overhead, their keen eyes scanning the ground for movement. This ephemeral burst of activity infuses Neplodridovi with a fleeting vibrancy.

Flora & Fauna

The flora that coats the region in inconsistent clumps is almost all a form of arctic scrub grass growing closely to what few muddy ponds manage to thaw in the arctic landscape.

Caribou and mammoths roam the hills, often hunted by both Psoglavi and giants. Smaller animals such as raptorial birds, foxes and hares can sometimes be found in the warmer months, with few exceptions made in the colder seasons.
