Flicker has spent approximately two weeks in the Infinite Ocean, though time flows differently here. After a near-fatal teleportation accident in the toxic wastes of the Dumps, she found herself submerged in a vast, alien ocean with no bottom, no surface, and no known limits. Rescued by an advanced aquatic species called the Krephorians, Flicker endured invasive surgery to survive—and adapted far beyond what they expected.
The Krephorians are a sentient aquatic species native to the Infinite Ocean—an endless, surreal world of layered currents, drifting ecosystems, and fluid reality. Their bodies resemble an elegant fusion of humanoid and crustacean: a powerful lower half like a giant crayfish, with an upright torso, armored arms, and expressive antennae. They are highly social but communicate in ways that defy human norms, using stridulation (vibrational language through etched rods), body posture, and rhythmic pulses of water and sound.
Krephorian society is complex and caste-driven, shaped by their roles as engineers, defenders, knowledge-keepers, and interface mediators. While some seem curious, even welcoming, others are cautious—or hostile. They appear to have no concept of a surface or sky, and the idea of a world beyond the ocean is alien to them. Yet despite these differences, some individuals have begun forming tenuous bonds across that divide. What the Krephorians ultimately want—or fear—remains unclear. But one thing is certain: in the depths of the Infinite Ocean, they are not alone anymore.
The Krephorians gave her gills, but her body did more: she regenerated the trauma, integrated the grafts, and began to evolve. Over time, she developed webbed fingers, fin-like feet, and an increasing resistance to pressure.
Communication was difficult at first. Flicker didn't form the biology be able to speak their entire language, but began with prime numbers, but over two weeks of constant engagement, she reached a basic level of understanding, slowly learning to recognize their patterns, intentions, and moods.
Her primary contact through all of this was a Krephorian linguist and interface caste member named Sha’kai, a quiet and curious teacher whose patience and consistency helped shape Flicker’s entire experience. Through shared effort, frustration, mimicry, and persistence, a rapport grew—though neither had a word for it.
Not all Krephorians approved of Flicker's presence. A faction—believing she might be a vanguard for an invading force—launched a covert assassination using three venomous hunter-eels bred for stealth and lethality. Flicker was ambushed while unarmed and alone, but she turned the encounter on its head: outmaneuvering the creatures, killing all three, and even consuming two of them during the fight. Their meat proved not only edible but a potent regenerative fuel.
The Krephorians' response was politically fraught. Leadership issued a careful, measured apology, claiming the attack was an “error” and that “measures had been taken.” No one admitted who gave the order. But Flicker, experienced in the layered deceit and factional maneuvering of ARGENT, read the room perfectly. The Krephorians weren’t just apologizing. They were saving face, hiding fractures, and treating her like a living weapon who could no longer be underestimated.
Rather than strike back, Flicker channeled that moment into something else. She focused on Sha’kai, who stood by her with quiet guilt and clear shame. Using empathy and insight, she opened up—not with accusations, but with understanding. She told Sha’kai about the pressures of her world, the factions, the strategies, the lies disguised as rules. About what it means to be used. About choosing connection over control.
It was the first time the Krephorian truly saw her.
In that moment, the two formed a bond—a new shared aspect between species, not codified by rank or command, but by recognition:
“We may be different, but maybe not that different.”

The scene ended not in fire or revenge, but in reflection. Flicker etched a rod with two symbols: one for surface, one for home.
Sha’kai watched. Stridulated. Then added a glyph of their own.
Flicker didn’t know the translation, but she understood it all the same:
“Impossible. But believed.”
She smiled as her tears washed into the ocean around her.
