Fires of His Passion is about a man who spends a long time adhering to his idea of traditional masculinity, only to realize it brings him nothing but isolation, alienation, and loneliness, and he eventually connects with a scullery maid over a shared love of pastry-making. They fall in love, and eventually he learns to express himself even beyond the language of creating impossibly complex and delicate dessert food, but then she dies, and he carries on his patissier hobby (after naming a small business after her) to honor her memory, and never has another lover or spouse.
