Lovely, Dark and Deep is an anthology series that is almost invariably about forbidden love between two people of entirely different social status. All the stories are by a single author, and underneath the incredibly graphic erotic chapters, there are subtle and legitimate criticisms of the theocratic state, and a round rejection of lingering resentment toward lowborn people as a result of their recent empowerment.
The most recurring character is never identified by gendered language or pronouns -- they're just Chrys, short for Chrysanthemum -- and they're the author's most frequent mouthpiece to sneak in social critique.
