These rites and fetishes are specific to The Last Frontier campaign and reflect Alaska's unique spiritual landscape, indigenous traditions, and the cosmic horror elements of the chronicle. Each has been designed for mechanical balance and clear gameplay utility.
All items follow standard Werewolf: The Forsaken 2nd Edition rules unless otherwise noted. Fetishes require the standard activation roll (Resolve + Composure, penalized by dot rating) or 1 Essence to bypass.
Custom Rites
Raven's Message (•)
This rite sends a brief message through the Shadow using raven-spirits as messengers.
Symbols: Communication, corvids, flight, urgency
Dice Pool: Manipulation + Animal Ken
Action: Instant
Duration: Instant
Cost: 1 Essence
Success: A raven-spirit delivers a message of up to 25 words to a recipient the ritemaster knows personally. Arrives within 1 hour (same city) or 1 day (within Alaska).
Failure: The message fails to arrive, or arrives garbled (ST's discretion).
Sample Rite: The ritemaster offers food (fresh meat or fish) to ravens while speaking the message aloud three times. The last repetition is in First Tongue. Ravens that accept the offering carry the message to the recipient.
This rite is faster than the core Messenger rite (••) but more limited in range and message length. Ideal for tactical communication during hunts.
Northern Lights Vigil (••)
This rite harnesses the aurora's spiritual resonance to strengthen werewolves' connection to Luna during extreme seasonal shifts.
Symbols: Light, transformation, the sky, Luna's gaze
Dice Pool: Presence + Occult
Action: Extended (10 successes; each roll = 5 minutes)
Duration: Until the next dawn
Cost: 1 Essence per participant
Requirement: Must be performed during an active aurora display
Success: All participants gain +2 to resist Death Rage triggers and +1 to Harmony rolls for the duration. During the darkest months (November–January), these bonuses increase to +3 and +2 respectively.
Sample Rite: The ritemaster stands beneath an active aurora display and howls in harmony with the shifting lights. Each pack member draws symbols on their skin using phosphorescent lichen that glows under the aurora. The rite culminates when all participants shift to Urhan form and run a circuit beneath the lights.
Winter's Compact (•••)
A rite adapted from Iñupiaq traditions, this ceremony earns the temporary favor of cold-spirits in exchange for meaningful sacrifice.
Symbols: Sacrifice, survival, endurance, cold
Dice Pool: Presence + Survival
Action: Extended (10 successes; each roll = 10 minutes)
Duration: One full moon cycle (approximately 1 month)
Cost: 2 Essence + a meaningful sacrifice
Success: For the duration, all pack members present during the rite gain:
- Immunity to mundane cold and environmental damage from temperature
- +2 to Survival rolls in winter conditions
- Spirits of ice, snow, and cold treat the pack as one step more favorable
- Can see through falling snow and blizzards without penalty
The benefits end immediately if ANY pack member takes shelter in heated indoor spaces for more than 4 hours at a time.
Sacrifice Required: The ritemaster must destroy something personally meaningful that provides comfort or protection:
- Lose 1 dot in a Social Merit (Contacts, Allies, etc.) representing a strained relationship
- Destroy an item with emotional significance (heirloom, gift from pack, etc.)
- Take a Breaking Point toward Flesh as you suppress human comfort-seeking
Cycle-Reading Rite (••••)
This rite allows the ritemaster to detect corruption from the Carrion King's influence and predict when/where it will manifest next.
Symbols: Time, patterns, corruption, ancient knowledge
Dice Pool: Intelligence + Occult
Action: Extended (15 successes; each roll = 10 minutes)
Cost: 3 Essence
Requirements: Must be performed at a locus. Must have previously encountered Carrion King corruption.
Success: The ritemaster receives THREE pieces of information (player's choice):
- Location of nearest Carrion King corruption within 10 miles
- Approximate strength of corruption (weak/moderate/strong/catastrophic)
- Time until next major manifestation event (within 24 hours / 1 week / 1 month / imminent)
- Type of corruption (spiritual / environmental / dimensional breach)
- Whether corruption is spreading or contained
- Name and Rank of any corrupted spirits in the area
Exceptional Success (5+ over target): Receive FIVE pieces of information instead of three.
Design Note: This is reconnaissance magic, not plot-breaking divination. It tells you WHERE and WHEN, not HOW TO SOLVE.
Permafrost Binding (•••••)
This rite traps a hostile spirit within permafrost, sealing it in frozen stasis. It requires specific environmental conditions and is NOT a catch-all solution.
Symbols: Ice, imprisonment, eternal cold, stillness
Dice Pool: Strength + Occult (contested by the spirit's Resistance)
Action: Extended (20 successes; each roll = 5 minutes)
Cost: 5 Essence + 1 Willpower
Requirements: Must be performed in stable permafrost. Spirit must be Rank 3 or lower and physically present.
Success: The spirit is trapped in frozen stasis for 1 year per success over the target number. While bound, the spirit cannot act, communicate, or use Numina.
The binding ends if:
- The permafrost melts (climate change, geothermal activity, etc.)
- The anchor object is destroyed or removed
- Someone performs a ritual unbinding (requires knowing the rite + 10 Essence)
- The duration expires naturally
Exceptional Success: Duration extended to 10 years per success over target.
Failure: The spirit escapes and becomes immediately hostile.
Custom Fetishes
All fetishes follow standard activation rules: Resolve + Composure roll penalized by dot rating, OR spend 1 Essence to bypass the roll.
Mukluks of the Hunter (•)
Traditional Iñupiaq boots crafted from seal skin and caribou hide, blessed by spirits of stealth and winter.
Activation: 1 Essence per day (or successful roll each morning)
Duration: 24 hours per activation
Effect:
- Leave no tracks in snow or ice
- +2 dice to Stealth rolls in winter conditions (snow, ice, tundra)
- Ignore difficult terrain caused by snow or ice
- Immunity to frostbite and cold-related foot injuries
Aurora Charm (••)
A carved pendant of walrus ivory or caribou antler depicting the northern lights. Contains spirits of aurora-light.
Activation: 1 Essence (or successful roll) during an aurora display
Duration: One scene
Effect:
- +3 dice to resist madness, confusion, or mental influence caused by aurora phenomena
- Ability to see clearly through aurora distortions and visual tricks
- +2 dice to Occult rolls related to dimensional phenomena while the aurora is visible
Special: During yellow aurora events (Carrion King corruption), the bearer must roll Harmony each scene the charm is active. On a failure, the charm draws the attention of entities within the aurora—they become aware of the bearer's location and may investigate.
Kaiyak's Compass (••)
A small carved bone pointer that spins freely on a leather thong. Named after a legendary Iñupiaq hunter who never lost their way.
Activation: 1 Essence per scene
Duration: One scene
Effect: When activated, the compass points toward one of the following (wielder's choice):
- Nearest locus (within 5 miles)
- Pack alpha's current location (if pack bond active)
- Most recent den or claimed territory boundary
- Direction of true north (useful when aurora interferes with normal compasses)
The compass remains attuned to the chosen target for one scene. If the target moves, the compass updates its direction once per minute.
Special: During blizzards or whiteout conditions, the compass also grants +2 dice to Survival rolls for navigation.
The compass does NOT detect enemies, traps, or danger—only the specific target types listed. It's a navigation tool, not a tactical sensor.
Ulu of the Hunt (•••)
A traditional woman's knife (ulu) carved from mammoth ivory with a razor-sharp blade. The spirit bound within is an ancient hunting-spirit.
Activation: 1 Essence per scene to activate all properties
Base Damage: 1L
TRACKING: Any living target wounded by this specific ulu during the current scene can be tracked by the wielder. The wielder knows the target's direction and approximate distance (close/moderate/far). Lasts as long as the target bleeds (until wounds fully healed OR 24 hours, whichever first).
SPIRIT-CUTTING: The ulu can harm incorporeal entities (spirits in Twilight, ghosts) as if they were material. On a hit, the blade also reveals the entity's nature (type, Rank, general intent).
SPECIAL: The ulu can cut through yellow ice (permafrost corrupted by the Carrion King). No mundane weapon can do this. Cutting yellow ice takes 1 turn per square foot and deals 1L to the wielder from psychic feedback.
Winter's Bite (•••)
A weapon (knife, hatchet, or spear) crafted with a blade of glacial ice that never melts. Contains a spirit of absolute cold.
Activation: 1 Essence per attack to activate the freezing effect
Damage: +2L (base weapon damage + 2)
FREEZING WOUNDS: When this weapon inflicts a wound, the target suffers flash-freezing at the injury site. For each wound currently suffered from Winter's Bite, the target loses 1 point of Defense (minimum 0) due to slowed reactions and frozen joints.
This penalty lasts until the target heals at least one wound from this weapon OR the scene ends.
Example: A target with 2 wounds from Winter's Bite suffers -2 Defense. If they heal 1 wound, they now have -1 Defense. If the scene ends, all penalties reset even if wounds remain.
Without spending Essence, the weapon deals normal damage with no special properties. The Defense penalty is strong but limited by wound healing and scene duration.
Seal-Spirit Parka (•••)
A traditional sealskin parka that contains a bound spirit of adaptation and survival. When worn, it reshapes itself to fit any humanoid form.
Passive Effect (always active when worn):
- Armor Rating: 1/1 (general/ballistic) in all forms
- Cold Immunity: Wearer is immune to mundane cold and environmental cold damage
- Water Resistance: +2 dice to Swimming rolls; can swim without penalty in freezing water
- The parka automatically resizes to fit through all five forms (Hishu to Urhan)
SHADOW CROSSING (1 Essence/day): Once per day, when the wearer crosses the Gauntlet, the parka can come with them into the Shadow, allowing the wearer to retain armor and cold protection in the Hisil.
Permafrost Anchor (••••)
A stone carved with ancient binding glyphs, frozen in stable permafrost for at least one year before activation. Contains a spirit of stillness and cold.
Activation: Extended action (10 successes; each roll = 10 minutes) + 5 Essence total
Note: This is a STATIONARY fetish—once placed, it cannot be moved without breaking the enchantment.
Creates a 100-yard radius zone with the following effects:
GAUNTLET STABILIZATION: The Gauntlet strength cannot be weakened by external forces for a number of days equal to the creator's Harmony. Natural fluctuations still occur.
AURORA BARRIER: During aurora displays, the zone is protected from aurora-based madness effects. Individuals within gain +3 to resist aurora phenomena.
CARRION KING WARD: Entities serving or corrupted by the Carrion King suffer 1L per turn they remain within the zone. Spirits associated with the King must roll Resistance to enter.
WOUND SEALING: If a dimensional breach (Wound) exists within the zone, the Anchor can stabilize it, preventing growth or spawning. This does NOT close the Wound—only contains it.
Duration: The Anchor remains active until:
- The permafrost melts (local temperature rises above freezing for 72+ consecutive hours)
- The stone is destroyed (Durability 5, 3 Structure)
- Someone spends 10 Essence in a counter-ritual to deactivate it
- The Gauntlet stabilization duration expires (but other effects continue)
