The Hedge and You: Practical Crossover Guidelines for Changeling

The Hedge: A Crossover Guide

This guide is for players in any venue — Changeling, Vampire, Werewolf, or Hunter — whose characters may enter, interact with, or be affected by the Hedge. The Hedge is primarily Changeling territory, but Anchorage is a shared city and the Hedge doesn't check credentials at the door.

What Is the Hedge?

The Hedge is a realm between the mortal world and Arcadia, the domain of the True Fae. It is not the Shadow and it is not the Underworld. These are separate supernatural dimensions that do not overlap, though they may exist in parallel. The Hedge is governed by dream-logic and narrative causality... things happen because they feel like they should, not because physics demands it. It is made of living thorns, impossible geography, and the residue of human stories.

In Anchorage, the Hedge is especially significant because of the Scour: a massive wasteland beyond the Freehold's borders where the Hedge's dream-logic has been stripped away. The Changeling venue's war against the Scour is fought primarily in the Hedge. Other supernaturals may encounter the Scour's effects without fully understanding what they are.

Entering the Hedge

The Hedge is accessed through Hedge Gates: portals that exist at liminal points in the mortal world (doorways, thresholds, crossroads, mirrors, windows). Changelings can open these gates as part of their nature. Other supernaturals cannot open Hedge Gates on their own unless they possess specific supernatural abilities that interact with dimensional boundaries, and even then it requires ST adjudication.

Non-Changelings can enter the Hedge if a gate is already open, if a Changeling opens one for them, or in rare cases if the Hedge itself pulls them in (which is never good). Once inside, the Hedge does not distinguish between Changeling and non-Changeling — its hazards, Thorns, and inhabitants affect everyone.

Hedge Navigation uses Wits + Survival, modified by Wyrd for Changelings. Non-Changeling supernaturals use the equivalent of Wyrd 1 for navigation purposes. Mortals and Hunters without supernatural abilities are also treated as Wyrd 1. This means non-Changelings can navigate the Hedge but do so at a significant disadvantage — paths are harder to find, distances feel wrong, and the Thorns seem to close behind you faster.

The Hedge actively resists non-Changeling travelers. The deeper you go, the worse this gets. The Interior (the Freehold's maintained territory) is relatively stable and navigable. The Margin (the buffer zone near the Scour) is dangerous for anyone. The Grey (Scour territory) is lethal for anyone without extensive preparation and an escort.

The Thorns

The Hedge's brambles are not always literal thorns — they manifest as whatever the Hedge's dream-logic finds appropriate: ice, static, whispers, vertigo, or actual physical thorns. Moving through the Hedge without following established Trods (paths) means forcing your way through the Thorns, which deal lethal damage. This damage is real, physical, and does not heal faster than normal once you leave the Hedge. Changelings have ways to mitigate Thorn damage. Other supernaturals generally do not.

Supernatural Abilities in the Hedge

This is the most important section for crossover characters. The Hedge is Fae territory, and not all supernatural abilities function normally within it.

Changeling Contracts function normally in the Hedge. They were designed for this environment.

Vampire Disciplines function normally in the Hedge, but there are complications. Vitae does not regenerate naturally in the Hedge — there is nothing to feed on unless you brought it with you or find something in the Hedge willing to make a deal (ill-advised). The Hedge's timelessness means that a Vampire who loses track of how long they've been inside may emerge to discover more or less time has passed than expected. Hunger is your primary enemy here.

Werewolf Gifts and Rites present the most complex crossover issue. The Hedge is not the Shadow. Spirits that enter the Hedge risk being transformed into Hobgoblins over time... this is established in Changeling lore and should make any Uratha deeply uncomfortable. Gifts that call upon spirits may function erratically or not at all, at ST discretion. The Gauntlet does not exist in the Hedge: you cannot step sideways into the Shadow from within the Hedge. You are cut off from the spirit world while in the Thorns. Luna's influence does not reach into the Hedge, which may affect certain Gifts or auspice abilities. ST adjudication is required for specific cases.

Hunter Tactics and Endowments function normally in the Hedge unless they rely on infrastructure that does not exist there (communications equipment, backup teams, mortal law enforcement). Hunters in the Hedge are mortals in a fundamentally supernatural space and should be treated as such — brave, resourceful, and profoundly out of their depth.

Glamour and Non-Changelings

Non-Changelings do not naturally perceive, produce, or interact with Glamour. They cannot harvest it, spend it, or detect its use without specific supernatural senses. However, Glamour-based effects (Contracts, Tokens, Hedge Fruit) affect non-Changelings normally. A Vampire hit by a Contract takes full effect. A Hunter who eats a Hedge Fruit experiences its properties. The Hedge does not care what you are — its rules apply to everyone inside it.

Goblin Fruit

Goblin Fruits found in the Hedge have real, physical effects on anyone who consumes them — Changeling or not. However, non-Changelings who consume Goblin Fruit risk Hedge-addiction and other side effects that Changelings are partially resistant to. Consuming Hedge products regularly without being Fae-touched is a path to becoming Fae-touched or worse. Hunters and Vampires should treat Goblin Fruit as useful but dangerous, like experimental pharmaceuticals from an unlicensed source.

The Mask and Other Supernaturals

Changelings appear human to mortals and most supernaturals thanks to the Mask — an involuntary illusion that conceals their true Mien. Other supernaturals with active perception abilities may be able to pierce the Mask. Vampires using Auspex may perceive the Mien through a Clash of Wills. Werewolves in certain forms or using certain Gifts may sense something is wrong. Hunters with Endowments that detect the supernatural may register a Changeling as "other" without understanding what they're seeing. In all cases, piercing the Mask is a Clash of Wills contested by the Changeling's Wyrd.

Pledges and Non-Changelings

The Wyrd enforces Changeling Pledges with absolute authority. A non-Changeling who enters into a Pledge with a Changeling is bound by it as surely as the Changeling is. The Wyrd does not care that you don't have Wyrd — it cares that you agreed. Breaking a Pledge carries supernatural consequences regardless of your template. This makes deals with Changelings — and especially with Hobgoblins like Pricetag — genuinely dangerous for any supernatural creature. You are playing by Fae rules whether you understand them or not.

Practical Guidance by Venue

For Vampires: The Hedge is survivable but hostile. You cannot feed there. Time moves strangely. The darkness is not your friend — the Hedge's darkness has its own inhabitants. If you must enter, go with a Changeling escort, bring blood reserves, and get out fast. The Scour is not your problem, but its effects on mortal Anchorage (missing persons, ecological disruption, strange behavior near certain locations) may become your problem.

For Werewolves: The Hedge is deeply alien territory. It looks like the Shadow but operates on completely different principles. Your spiritual senses will tell you something is profoundly wrong here, and they are correct. Do not bring spirits into the Hedge. Do not attempt to reach the Shadow from within the Hedge. Respect the Freehold's territory as you would expect others to respect yours. The Scour may or may not have a Shadow-side manifestation ...

For Hunters: The Hedge is the single most dangerous place you can go in Anchorage. You are a mortal in a realm of living nightmares. Your weapons work. Your training works. Your backup does not exist here, your phone does not work here, and the rules you understand do not apply here. If you find yourself in the Hedge, your priority is getting out. If you choose to enter deliberately, you are either very brave or very foolish, and the Hedge does not distinguish between the two.
